Giant drop & Sky Trek tower

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby RBull4life on October 22nd, 2005, 9:16 am
Does anybody know why they keep the cars for Giant Drop, and the cabin for Sky Trek up at the top of the towers when the park is closed. Especially duing the winter months when the park is closed for an extended time.

I think its because some people are idiots and will try to get into them. When I went to a fair overnight they kept everything up in the air.

I think it's because when the cabin or cars are at the bottom of the tower, the cables are exposed, and harsh weather can do some damage to them. If they are halted at the top of the tower, the cables will be inside the towers. That's the only logical reason I can think of.

I thought that it was to make the tower stable during possible windstorms etc etc.

Question: How would the cables be inside the tower when the cars are at the top of the tower itself?

The winch that has all the cables is probably at the top of the tower. If the cars are up there, the cables are out of the weather and in the tower.

I think it's for both reasons even though the cable thing is probably the real reason.

That is usually when the park is opening the next day. During the winter months the cars are usually at the top of the tower unless they are doing something to it.

It is either to protect the cables or also the counterweights are heavier than the cars/cabins, so it puts alot less stress on the gearboxes/motors to keep the empty cars at the top.

Also, it helps to promote the park and ride as people are driving by and see the cabins up at the top of the towers. It makes the park look less dead than it really is. Plus the cable reason I think.

It's for the cables.

^ Yea it is! Nothing can beat this ride out with its theming and effects and all that other good stuff. Even though Giant drop is higher, tot still beats it by a long shot.

It can break down at the top and it happened to my friends from high school. Like you said they got stuck at the very top and witout warning booooooommmm they drop. I would freak out cause you don't know whats going on, you would think the ride wont stop at the bottom.

yeah i'd freak i hate hights, i dont mind them on rollercoasters like bull or anything and i dont mind Sky Trek Tower but giant drop is a little to much for me i dont think i will ride it anymore. i dont mind the power tower that shoots you up its not as bad of a ride then just being at the top and not knowing when your going to drop.
