A teenage girl wearing sandals place her feet flat on the wall while the ride was in motion. As the ride slowed and the floor rose up, her toes got caught between the wall and the floor.
Chance stated that as the ride gets older , the floor and wall become more separated (larger gap) and they have a safety bar that can be installed.
From what I remember, since there was a lawsuit at SFGAm on this incident, a judge ordered the ride to be removed. If the judge didn't order its removal, the park most likely would have installed the safety bar and continued operation with it.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
She was actually wearing tennis shoes, I have the pic here somewhere (somewhat gory, makes your toes hurt just looking at it).
Just the fact that that a foot with a shoe on can get stuck in there just wasant all that appealing to the park, probably had alot to do with the decision to tear it out. Though there is a fix for that, which I believe is in use at SFStL, which is a big, about a 2 inch tall, and 1 inch thick rubber strip that is attached to the inside of the barrel and the floor comes up flush to the strip.

I know the Edge was a great ride because FREEFALL at SFMM is the most memorable ride I rode there. It freaked me out so bad that I would feel a little sick when it pushes you over, so I rode it another 5 times that night because of its intensity. I love that ride more than Goliath O.K but I do have to say X was the best! I think about freefall more because of how many times I rode it and its amazing air!

Amazing Air? Maybe, but Freefall at SFMM killed my shoulder, i hate those types of drop rides.
I think, Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the girl asked in her lawsuit that she wanted six flags to remove the ride so no other person would go through what see went through plus the settlement.
I also miss the Sky Whirl!
My kids rode the cajun cliffhanger type ride when we went to SFMM and they really enjoyed the ride, too bad SFGAM did the the easly thing and closed the ride rather than fixing what needed to be fixed and re-opened it.
The courts forced Six Flags to take out the ride as part of the settlement with the girls family. They didn't want the same thing to happen to another person, and going to SFGAm and seeing it would be a painful reminder of the pain it caused. I myself probably wouldn't have gone on it for a few years after the incident myself, but regardless, SFGAm was required to remove the ride, afterwards Six Flags added the repair piece to similar rides voluntarily.

I didn't get a chance go to on Freefall but I did go on Demon's Drop at CP. I love Demon's Drop and it even scared me a little. I think it would be cool if GAm had a generation one because it could be a build up ride for Giant Drop. Plus they're fun.
SF could have and should have appealed the ruling by the judge!!
A judge should determine what rides a company will have a park or how a company operates its business if it is done in a lawful manner. And since other parks operate this type of ride to this day in a safe/proper manner the judge's decision should nave been contested.
Why contest it? It didn't get many riders in a day anymore anyway. I know, I used to work it. You could stand there for 3 hours at a time and NO ONE would come to ride it. It just cost extra money to hire people to run it, then when the end of the season approached and the college students left and most of the people left behind to work are under 18 and work permits don't allow long hours, there is low staffing as it is in the park. Add to the fact that after the incident was publicized many people wouldn't ride it because of the bad press. It also lowered the settlement amount. If they hadn't removed it, they would have paid the girl and her family more. Monitarily wise is was a smart choice. From a historic standpoint, it stinks.
