Cool, it tested missing some LIM's. Did it explode?
I'm kidding. I really want to see how a LIM burns up. I could see it overheating, but I wouldn't think there would be much external damage. The coil and steel inside would probably warp, deform, or be rendered less/unconductive.
You're more than likely correct on the overheat deforming the LIM.
The only problem I have with that theory is that it shouldn't have been caused by an electrical surge. The fusing on the transformers, and in the ride panel should have blown well before the surge would have reached the main circuit area above the track.
I say shouldn't because stranger things have happened when it comes to fuse protection.
Were there any storms in the area between when the outage occurred, and when V2 went down?

It's the most fun in the park when your laughing in the dark.

Yeah me too. But I like Steel Venom at valleyfair because it brakes you on the straight tower like V2.
Plus the line doesn't get as long as V2!

I'm not a big fan of V2 myself. I suppose it's worth a ride if there is absolutely no wait. I'll usually pass though.
The biggest thing that sucks about all this is that it will more than likely still be down next Wednesday when I make my next trip to GAm. I need it open to thin-out the lines for the coasters I actually want to ride. Go figure.
My Favorite SFGAm Coasters:
Raging Bull, Viper, Batman: The Ride, Iron Wolf
Through normal use the casing gets darker, but for a real burn out..
Inside the coils of wire are fairly high guage(thinner wire), after a while the wire(s) either overheat to the point where it breaks and electrictal conductivity is broken, or the heat can damage the varnish on the wires causing a short that renders the LIM useless as well.
Technically neither affects the look of the exterior of the LIM, but generally it happens on older more used LIM's where just the long periods of high heat have darkened the case extensively.
Favorite Wood Coasters: The Voyage, Ravine Flyer II, Thunderhead, Balder Favorite Steel: Voltron Nevera, Steel Vengeance, Expedition GeForce, Olympia Looping Parks visited: 232, Coasters Ridden: Steel: 894, Wood: 179, Total: 1073
I was waiting for Eagle earlier this year and One employee tol a customer (with a strait face) that Blue ran backwards because the wheels they need for it to go foreward are to expensive.
In line for Iron Wolf"we ordered the same trains that Raging Bull has, so come back next year for a completely different ride experience" That one made me giggle
V2 is not going to be closed for the rest of the season. All inications thus far point to a bad LIM magnet or faulty electronics. With the number of Inatamin shuttle coasters around the world I'm sure Inatamin has spare parts laying around the shop over there in Europe. Just give it time. Six Flags isn't going to let a 10,000,000 dollar ride just sit there and waste away (Well maybe Magic Mountain, but not Great America)
Just wondering how all you people are making your calls on when the ride will open? I don't/won't believe any of you until your a certified mechanic at Six Flags and can back up your arguments.
If what appears to be wrong, is actually the only problem on the ride, I'd give it probably another 1-2 weeks.
Though something could have happened elsewhere in the rides systems that could have caused the LIM's to fail. As in maintaince you have to remember, a burnt up lim may not be the problem itself, just an indicator/result of other problems elsewhere (Impulses and ESPECIALLY V2 in particular is known for having extensive electrictal issues(V2 though takes some of those issues to the extreme, or in Six Flags case, to the X-treme)

I haven't seen any progress at all, it's still sitting between the station and the first spike, as of yesterday. I couldn't see all these Missing lims everyone's talking about, can anyone give me a better description of their location?
