Okay, so I've loved coasters and SFGAm my whole life. I used to draw pictures of them when I was a little kid and beg to go to parks all the time. Well now I am grown up (going to be a sophomore in college) and I still have the same passion for them. I go to parks whenever I have a chance. I have my season pass and I want to go every day I can this summer when I'm not working. I drive my own car as well. I would like to go alone sometimes for the freedom, and other times go with friends for the company. But my parents don't really like this interest with coasters that I hold. They see it as pointless, and they don't want to see me going to Six Flags every week. I went Thursday and I'd like to go again this coming week, but my parents still say "do something else with your time you were just there"....and I can't stand it. Coasters and parks are one thing that I really love though, and I don't really know what to do. This is all considering I am a mere 40 minute drive down I-94 from the park. Like I said there's nothing I would really rather be doing during many of my off days than riding coasters, but I don't know how to go about this problem that my parents have with me visiting SFGAm often. Any advice or suggestions for my situation? Thanks...and I know this is a strange topic.

My take is this: You are an adult and can choose your own hobbies.
Your parents might believe it's pointless but if it's something you enjoy, then continue doing it. As long as it doesn't jeopardize your school, work, life, etc., don't worry about what they tell you.
If it makes them feel any better, let them know that this hobby (at least in this region) is only 6 months out of the year.
Although, wanting to go every waking moment when you aren't working is a little overboard.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
I agree with Chitown, also ask them if they would prefer you take up drinking as a hobbie or getting your thrills from illeagle drugs. I doubt they would. I find it no different then someone who goes out dancing 3-5 times a week. Everyone has there own ways of thrills and fun.
Wow, thats wierd how they are against your love for coasters. Ive been around supporters of coasters my whole life, so i couldnt imagine what it would be like not having coaster lovers in the family. What I would do, is ask them why they are against you going to theme parks. Then explain to them that you are an adult now, and you can make your own choices.
Yeah I guess they just think that I am weird for it. I think part of it comes from a while back when they saw some coaster segment on the news and they interviewed this guy who was an enthusiast but was a total nerd about it all...and they think that's what I am turning into (I'm not).

LOL, I've used that excuse a few times before. If you live with your parents still then it might be a problem to go, but I doubt they would kick you out just for going a lot. If you don't live with them, then just tell them that you're going and they can't do anything about it. I'm only going to be a sophmore in high school, and I tell my parents that I'm going 1-3 times a week even if they don't like it.
i have the same problem, i'm almost 18. My dad sees no point of going to the park for a few hours when I have a season pass. they think i'm crazy for going all the time and stuff.
I'm sorry that you're going through this. I think that your parents may see this as an addiction rather than a hobby. I truly hope that this situation doesn't split the ties between you and your family. Maybe you should show them why this means so much to you by inviting them to go to GAm with you.
hehe I tried inviting them. I have loved coasters my whole life, and when I was in third grade for my birthday my parents took me to Cedar Point for the first time. I was in awe at Mean Streak, Raptor and Magnum. I had the time of my life. My dad got sick though on Corkscrew and Magnum, and my sister and my mom would never get on a coaster...ha.
But yeah I don't know how to explain to them that's it's a hobby and not an addiction, I think this may be the problem. I have many other things I am into...I work at Wrigley Field and at a furniture shop as well, and I repair computers for people in my spare time. I just hope they can accept the fact that I'm going again in two days

I just ignore what my parents say when they say i'm wasting my time. Like on Saturday for instance, I wanted to go to sfgam after my grad party, which was around 5 PM, and when i told my dad i was going there, he said I was stupid for going up there and stuff, and I shouldn't go. I brushed it off, and ended up having a great time with a friend or two. I don't know how to help you, seeing that I can't change how my dad feels about me going. I don't know if he thinks i'm too old to go, i'm not even 18 yet, or what it is. He liked SFgam when he was young. Sorry I can't help.
Maybe your parents feel that you are young and have your whole life ahead of you and wants for you to do things that will better yourself personally. Maybe they want for you to use your free time to give back to the community or explore something new and exciting. If community serivce is questionable, why don't you get into a program like Big Brothers/Big Sisters and work with a child who possibly never been to an Amusement Park and make their dream come true by taking them to Great America. Or you can take a road trip with some friends and explore different cities across the country and stop by a few parks along the way.
I'm the only one in my family who likes coasters and my parents always tell me when I go to a park, "you're just gonna come home tired, aggravated, and needing proper food". I still go, they don't mind too much.
I get the "Your going again? You already went twice this year!" speil all the time. But I know that my parents know that roller coasters and visiting parks is my hobby, and that I love doing that. They just tell me... "Do whatever makes you happy".
Besides, as was stated before, you are an adult and can make your own decisions. I think your parents will eventually get over it and realize it's something you love to do.

They gave me the usual, "you were just there a week ago!" line. Then they said something to the extent of "I don't expect you to be doing this every week."
Meh I don't care it's my car, my money and my time. And It's what I love to do.

When I was younger my parents use to give me crap about going to SF all the time. I use to just tell them I was going to a friends house or going to see a movie to cover up my visits.

U only live 40 min away. I live 1.5 hrs away and I will be there often.
This seems like the exact same problem i have sometimes....
And its retarded, The way i see it: I bought the car(i did the title is in my name), I buy the gas, i pay for the insurance, i bought the season pass and I have a full time job, which limits the time i can spend at the park anyway.
I think i should be able to do whatever the hell i want too.
Regaurdless of what they think about your hobby, explain to them that its what you enjoy doing and its not harming anyone.
Also like Chitown said, we only get to enjoy our hobby in this region 6 months out of the year.
