Added supports on Impulse

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby Great America Guy on March 4th, 2004, 11:22 pm
Cedar point added supports on their impulse coaster. It is now been reported that Superman ultimate Escape in SFWOA has new supports. I would like to see these added to V2. It seems everytime that coaster goes up the back spike the tower sways like crazy. I guess Intamin realizes that their Impulse coaster needs more support.

The swaying makes it more fun. If they add supports, I'm going to have to throw something at somebody.

The tower is designed to sway like that. If it was super rigid then stuff would break. It's just like skyscrapers, they sway to release energy slowly through special joints. The same holds true for Iron Wolf. It has ball joints on the track that allows a little room for play and give so nothing will snap.

I believe that CP added extra supports because WT was launching too fast and causing stress fractures.

V2 doesnt need extra supports, as stated above it was designed to sway, but then again Xcelerator, Wicked Twister, Goliath SFH, all needed extra support a year after it opened. Typical Intamin.

speaking of v2...does anyone know what really caused it to break down during fright fest?

It was down like it always is in Fright Fest (incase your wondering no Intamin rides can last a year without blowing up ;)).

I believe I remember hearing that the circut it was on blew out and couldn't/too hard to replace before the end of the season. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that one of the posters here that works at the park said this.

I think I remember it raining sometime during early Fright Fest, on the 18th or something. I heard there was some black out and that it killed V2's system. I could be wrong though... the same thing happened in 2001.

Uh oh, he knows my name. I'm toast .

 Seriousley I dont even work at SFGAm but I still never say anything that would be sensitive info (cause I can wait for it to open instead of needing to know why it's closed).

V2 doesn't need extra supports, it doesn't sway to much.

Well, it is actually better for it to sway. If it didn't it would cause stress fractures. With it swaying it reduces that risk dramatically. It was designed to sway. Plus we don't have the winds of Lake Erie. There it may sway too much and the added supports cause to sway more desirably. I work with steel and you wouldn't believe how strong it is.

OMG. They are supports. They dont affect the ride in any positive way. "I want them NOW." You act as if sfwoa got a new coaster that our park should have. This is one stupid topic along with the fate of the carosuel.

Yeah, ok.

You are calling this post and the carousel post stupid but at the same time have a signature telling a bridge to Rest in Peace.

Sure, right, o.k. :)
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.

So you guys are located right off the windy city and you're saying you dont' need the supports? I don't know why S:UE would need them and you guys wouldn't. Sure S:UE is a year older, but still they are almost exactly the same structural wise. I say add the supports to V2. It's better to add them now than to see in 10 years it's no longer safe.

I agree with coasterzak, get em on there now, I was outside when those high winds were around 1-2 weeks ago. I could imaagine the tower swaying a little too much with winds like that. So I'd say go put em on.

I wouldn't imagine them swaying too much. Its a hollow structure so pressure never really builds up on one side. I've been there on a windy day, and it sways, but it stays in a rhymic motion. This is easier on the metal and wont cause it to break as easily as it would in a non rhythmic motion.

And do we even know for sure if S:TE is getting new supports? I would also like to know about that new impulse going up, does it have added supports?

I was there on the last day is was open, and V2 was down all day, I just thought is was due to the rain, or since nobody was at the park that day. If anyone was there, everything was pretty much a walk-on.

It was operating 2002 Fright Fest, but not 2001, and not 2003. Still not a good percentage (well it is for an Intamin ride ).
