Sky Trek Tower Question

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby ttd rox on September 2nd, 2011, 8:19 pm
Hey guys,

I just had a random question after reading somewhere that this is possible. Can you really see the Sears (Willis) Tower from the top of it on a clear day? I know you can see Lake Michigan but is Chicago too far?

On a clear day, you can see the whole skyline of Chicago.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.

You can clearly see every major building in chicago on a clear day from Sky Trek Tower, same goes for Giant Drop, Bull if you turn around backwards and back in the day, Sky Whirl. There are 4 large radio towers a few miles south of the park just off 94 that are all in a line next to each other, I forget which ones, but between 2 of them is where you see the Skyline.

My friend and I turned back and to the right while going up Bull and I knew I saw buildings which is also why I brought this topic up. I know you can also clearly see the stacks around Waukegan. Thanks for the info!

With that said, if you look to the left and back on top of Eagle can you see it as well?

I think so actually, but it isn't left and behind you, it's roughly say at around the 10 oclock position when you're going up the lift, so just to your left will suffice. The radio towers help a lot in locating it.

You know what's wierd is you can see Downtown Chicago from STT but you can't see STT or SFGAm from the Sears Tower. It was a clear day when we went up too. Has anyone seen SFGAm from the Sears Tower

I have not! I have tried my best to do it, but the tower is too thin to see from a far distance. You only can see the Sears tower as it is on a lake, and nothing (no hills or other trees, buildings, etc) are in the way of it.

Also Sears tower is 1200 feet tall and black/gold which makes it way easy to spot. Also I looked today, if you're riding the red side of American Eagle, the skyline is slightly behind you and to your left, maybe around the 8 o clock position.

I'll be going in a few weeks and I'll make sure to check it out. It does seem strange that you can't see SFGAm from the Sears. I go to Chicago about once a month or so but stopped going to the Sears because of how much money they charge for the sky deck.

Is this closed for this season or not? I hope not - at least a few more weeks.

According to Google Maps, downtown Milwaukee is 49 miles away from Great America while downtown Chicago is 45. If they are comparable distances, why can't downtown Milwaukee be seen from the park? I mean granted the buildings in Chicago are a LOT taller, but the US Bank building in Milwaukee is 600 feet, right around 20 or so buildings of the Chicago skyline are around that height, and they can all be seen fine.

A lot of factors can come into play. The height of the buildings is one. The Sears(refuse to refer to it by "new" name to this day) and the Hancock are very recognizable from some distance, plus they have a lot of other buildings over 600 feet like the Trump, CBS, NBC buildings etc.

Terrain. There might not be a lot of hills and peaks and valleys between SFGAm and Chicago that there are between the park and Milwaukee.

Altitude/Elevation. Milwaukee 617 ft. is actually higher by a few feet than Chicago 597. Which is crazy if you can't see it, maybe no one has tried to look? Then again those pesky skyscrapers come into play haha.

Also Milwaukee is north along the line of longitude, whereas Chicago is south. The whole uphill/downhill thing.

I don't know the exact science, but this might be a fun experiment. People with cameras and telephoto lenses, pictures will be appreciated.
Push down, then pull up. Exit to your left/right. And, enjoy the rest of your day at Six Flags! Your friendly enthusiast Kyle.

I haven't been able to see Milwaukee from anywhere in the park before. Keep in mind the tallest building in Milwaukee is the US Bank Center which is only 601 ft tall; it's also white and would tend to reflect light. The Hancock is approximately twice that. When I look around, I can really only see the Sears Tower and Hancock Center in Chicago when I'm at the park, and they aren't all that clear.

Four of Chicago's tallest building in order are the Sears, Trump, Aon, and Handcock. Those are about 1200' on over. There are also plenty of buildings between the 800 ft and 1200 ft. My point is Chicago much easier to spot than a couple tall buildings in Milwaukee.

Its a bit late for this, but going on STT on the 4th of July would be soo cool. Seeing all the towns doing their fiereworks from atop of STT. I bet you could get amazing pictures from up there. I like STT too because its air-conditioned and there is never a long wait to get on, so you can cool off real fast.

I got a question: Whats the longest wait anyone has had to endure for Sky Trek Tower?? I'll be shocked if its more than 30 minutes.

The most i probably have waited is 2 cycles. I've always wondered this two and i'm glad you brought it up. Do either of the Log Rides or the Columbia get full queues anymore.

I probably waited 2 cycles too which is about 10 minutes. Sky Trek Tower, and the Columbia are high capacity rides. Sky Trek Tower holds 70 people, and Columbia I don't know off-hand, but it does have a lot of horses / other animals. I would love to know how much the Scenic Railway holds.

Trivia question: What's the only ride at the park in which you never have to get off? Well, at least I don't think you ever have to except during Fright Fest?

^I've been on the scenic railway multiple times without getting off. I was going to say you will be able to see Chicago from X-Flight, but it's facing the other direction as far as the lift goes I think.

I actually had to wait about 20 minutes for yankee clipper. Not many people know about that ride. Are they getting rid of it now? Roaring Rapids usually has real long waits over the HOT summer months. Longest I waited for that was 40 minutes. I kinda don't like the idea of sharing a boat with strangers. Especially teens. They try to be so funny, trying to compete with each other...too bad we will never see blood red water in the water rides. But anywho back to topic, I cannot wait ti see the ape on top!! One more sign Frightfest is near!! Does the ape have a name? God STT is the wildest ride at the park!!

Both only board every so often as well and they take a long time to stop. And probably the train.

X Flight isn't that tall either. 121? Somehow i don't think you will be able to see it

^You can see Chicago from the top of Eagle. Though AE is a good 25 ft taller. Another thing would be the harnesses restricting you from turning around on X-Flight.
