CHANG WATCH: The Official Topic

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby wishman35 on June 6th, 2010, 6:42 pm
Its just a cheap move... nothing more and nothing less. Clearly there is no need for a stand up coaster, but it just so happens that Chang can be moved here and built and utilized without much of an issue it seems.

No need to construct a new coaster from scratch, and no need to spend the huge amounts of money on new track and new cars.

Its a budget move, it gives GAm a new fairly big coaster, but its nothing revolutionary, not needed, not going to be everyones favorite ride, and will probably be scoffed at once people hear stand up... until they ride it.

Of course we will all enjoy this new toy to play with, and apparently there is little to no hope for a new giga/hyper/strata/ or dive coaster ... so why not just take what we can get right?

Sure, I bought the Xbox 360 Arcade the 1st day it came out because the Premium version was sold out and I really just wanted to have a new toy to play with from Day 1. Too bad that I had to buy a hard drive/wireless controller/ ect all on the side because of my eagerness.

Chang will satisfy our thirst at first, but as soon as you all ride it once... we are all going to be up in arms about what is done with Iron Wolf and "how come the park won't give us a new flat or new dive coaster in Wolfs spot" ... I can see it happening.

I think a good stand up like Chang will be MUCH popular than Iron Wolf ever was. Six Flags never did Wolf any favors by putting it in the back of the park, giving it that very faded looking color and refusing to do SOME make over when coasters from other parks have been getting rehab from time to time. Probably just not a important ride to the chain but we KNOW there are 3 rides in danger within 10 years tops:

Wolf
Whizzer
Demon

2 of them are because of old age and hard to find parts/maintenance. Wolf is just a ride VERY few care to ride even on busy days at the park.

I understand the economy now and how difficult it is for the chain having gone through bankruptcy and all. If I was that obsessed with thrill rides I would check out a Cedar Fair park from time to time. I love our park and I am satisfied with what we have.

There is something for everyone at the park. Little ones have Wiggles, Camp Cartoon, Little Dipper, etc. Older kids have Dark Knight, Demon, Whizzer, etc. For those who perfer to be lower on the ground but still have fun we have countless great flat rides. For those with heights and speed in mind we have Bull, Superman, V2, Batman and oh yeah 2 GREAT wooden coasters that offer something different and hold a special place in my heart. Eagle is pushing 30 and is in great shape compared to previous seasons. Viper gives me the best air time out of most rides in the park.

^ I think any ride can be considered "in danger" at some point in its life. At some point, you can no longer justify putting money, time, and effort into something that exceeds the value of the item (i.e. a car)....that's just the way it happens.

As far as the footprint for IW....it isn't that big. You also have to consider the service road that goes through the footprint too as well as the train tracks. The station was originally moved to encompass Z-Force and that was factored in when they custom-designed IW. There's no way any "cookie cutter" clone of anything is going to fit there *if* that's the path the company chooses. Also, with an interim CEO it's hard to say how much "change" is going to take place. I would assume most of the 50th anniversary plans are staying entact but who knows for sure.

So, Am I to assume Chang will be painted once it is put back together? Is that how it will be done? And instead of "space port area" how about calling it the former "Space Shuttle Area"?

When SSA first opened that area was known as "Space Port USA". Pretty sure I've seen a pic of the old gokart sign (the white one) signed as such, but I don't think it was ever considered a true "territory".

Though its nothin to really think about, I do wonder why Hank said "space port" instead of somethin like the "left upper corner of the park" or somethin of the like...I don't know which part of the park as if its left or right to be exact, but I'm just sayin somethin in that nature. ;)

I re-watched the video of the zoning board meeting, and he did say that the coaster is a stand up coaster, but he never said that it would be run as a stand up. Maybe it is a very minor detail, but I am still hoping that they will run different trains on it.

He also said a "New Generation" of stand-up. Not new generation of floorless. Get over it, Chang will remain a STAND-UP Coaster.

Iron wolf is also a "new generation" stand up. I'm still not convinced that it will be running as a stand up though. Either way Im thrilled to have a new coaster in the park.

Lets see here.

1) Park President said it was stand up, would he lie to the Gurnee ZBA? I don't think so.
2) Trains spotted in an ABC video and they are NOT present on Iron Wolf, so what else would they be there for? Decoration? Physics day prop? (Like Shockwave's trains)
3) All news articles are pointed at a stand-up, like I said, Hank, the park President, would never say something to the ZBA that wasn't true. Go to the Village Board meeting, prove me (Galvan,Jonrev, Brian) right.

Im sure we all wanna floorless Chang, as they are very cool coasters. But why would six flags go outta there way to buy 3 floorless trains at a very high price when theres no need to?
Top 5: 1) El Toro. 2) Maverick. 3) Millenium Force. 4) Diamondback. 5) X2.

Hello! I bet Iron Wolf will be shipped off to another park or scrapped altogether in 2011. So, we may not have 2 stand ups run at the same time...Six Flags IS in a position now to recycle rides and just repaint/re-theme them. Maybe another park will get a newly redone Iron Wolf next season.

He never said that they were going to run it like a stand up. He said that currently it is a stand up. Nothing else was said. That makes no indication of what could be done with it in the future.

Don't even try and demean me with point number two. It seems to me that the decision is still up in the air what they wanna do they could easily run it as a second stand up and I would have no issue with that as from what I have hear Chang is an amazing ride. There is no way that they could just throw the trains on wolf though. They would have to have B&M come out and get the OK otherwise I'm sure the insurance company would go apeshit. So the fact that they aren't currently on wolf doesn't mean anything. I agree that most signs point to two stand ups but my point is that there is still a chance for new trains.

There is also the chance that Iron Wolf will not be here next year. Decisions like to remove rides can and often do happen spur of the moment.

If there's one thing from SF staff that I believe, it's their statement on Wolf not going anywhere.

Dameon's sneaky and unreliable talk earlier at ncc only made it clear wolf would stay the way it is this year. no confirmation has been made about what will occur in 2011.
