Tipping the VIP tour guide

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby Black Dynomite on May 30th, 2010, 2:02 pm
I have a VIP tour coming up soon. I don't know if we're supposed to tip the tour guide or not. This person is going to be with us all day taking care of us. I would think we'd be expected to tip, but how much? I suppose I could call the VIP office and ask, but I think its kind of awkward to ask them "Am I supposed to tip you?"

Help?

You paid $299 a person, I don't believe you need to tip them. ;)

But I'm sure if they were that good, you could give them a little bit on behalf of your group.

I agree ... Id say you are paying so much to begin with, I wouldn't even consider tipping after forking almost a grand for a family.

Tip if you feel the deserve one. It's all what you feel, not what others say you should do.

If it's a teenager who looks like they have nothing better to do, don't tip em'.

If it's someone any age who looks like they care about your happiness and experience tip them, but be modest. Really, it's all about if you have the money. It seems you were able to shell out the clams for the tour so, I guess you can tip.

I find it amazing that giving them $300, you are even worried about giving them a tip? Do what you want though.

Let me clear up what I'm sensing to be a preconcieved notion. I'm not some rich guy that throws money around. Me and 3 other friends all saved to go VIP this year because of the last time we went to SFGAM. We went on a Wednesday in August and endured one of the hottest, busiest days I had ever seen. I knew we were in trouble when I saw a bunch of school buses with "Cook County" on them. We had an awful time. All day teenagers and adults were line jumping to meet up with their friends 3 or 4 que lanes ahead of us. There was one girl that was standing behind us that refused to join her friends and climb over the bars. She said it wasn't right. I actually thanked her. The vile language used by certain groups of people made me embarassed for the kids waiting in line. I'm not a prude, but this was over the top, especially in front of 9 and 10 year old girls. . I don't care for the Flash Pass because of how it is operated. I liked the old punch card style better. We decided that since we only go once or twice a year, lets go first class and avoid the lines all together. On top of that, parking, food and drinks and a few other perks....$300 doesn't seem like that much. You just have to save up. I caught a break on the tickets because I used my AMEX card and saved 20%. That brought the price to $239 pp. The fact that I can go on a weekend, not have to deal with the weekend crowds, and not have to use a vacation day and miss work during the week is a perk to me too. My friends and I work very long and hard hours at demanding jobs. $239 to spend the day at Six Flags and not be aggravated by the standard theme park BS is a bargain.

I still don't know if I'm supposed to tip this person or not. I guess we'll just have to see how the day goes and the level of service we recieve.

I'll say its the way to go, def. but what I'm also gonna say, is why don't you call guest services/relations dept. & as them what should be done. It may seem embarrassing, but at least you'll have professional opinion. I said before, I'd say tip but David has a point...depends on how they treat you & the job.

I agree with gottastrata33

If the guide gave your group a great time then I would give him/her $40-$80 tip

It's possible that six flags does not allow tipping so they might not be able to accept it.

I would at least offer the tip (do it on the side) and see what happens.

Have A Good Time :P

Post back after you go and let us know how it goes and if you think it was worth the extra $$$

I think if they do a good job tip them like 10-15% so probably 29.99 or the last penny 30.00. But only if they are good and know what they are talking about and are polite and curteous.

The guides are not allowed to accept tips. If you insist it upon them they are required to give it to SF. Even when Mark Shapiro and his family were in the park he insisted on giving the guide a tip and the park made him give it to the park.

The tour guides are not allowed to collect or receive any tipping from guests. Please do not put them in that position. If you want to be nice to your tour guide you can always ask if they would like to ride the ride with you or how lunch with you and your group. Or just have a great Six Flags day with your tour guide. Trust me they are not expecting on getting tips and please don't offer one because they will feel bad on rejecting it.

Looks like the weather isn't going to cooperate with us tomorrow, so we had to reschedule. It's a bummer, but I'm not going to spend the day in the rain watching them close rides down because of lightning. We'll get there sooner or later. Due to the expected crowd, I'm not interested in going on the 19th and the 26th is "Walk for Cancer" day, so I'm not going then either. There is no way I'm going to look across at the que line full of little kids with cancer and make them wait while I get on the ride before them. We'll get there before the season ends.

Luckily there is a carnival in town this weekend, so I'm going to run down there and get a funnel cake. I was so looking forward to eating one of those tomorrow. Instead, I'll be at work.

Thanks for the advice on tipping. I was prepared to, but if they can't take them, I'm not offering. I've already informed our guide that they are going to be part of our group and to enjoy themselves. We're there to have a good time and irritate as many people as possible.

^Even if you try not to it does. Happened to my friend and I at SF STL using the Gold Flash Pass. We were booed on Evel Knevel and Tony hawk while being yelled at on The Boss twice.

Exactly. When I first used flash pass when it was a punchcard, we got glares and rude comments from people. One guy was furious and started yelling at the line attendant about how unfair it was. The attendant explained the program to him and the guy said, "Oh, so it's ok to cheat and cut the line as long as you pay to cheat and cut the line. Nice example you are setting for my kids!" That was just at the merge point for Flash Pass. I can only imagine how irritating it has to be to stand 90+ minutes in line for the Raging Bull, sweating from the heat, thirsty, going back and forth in the ques, staring at the same people over and over, finally getting to the station, deciding to wait another 20 minutes for the front, getting to the gate thinking it's your finally your turn next.....and then you see some guy walk in through the exit, hand over his cup of Dipping Dots to a park employee as he and his friends, sweat free and fresh as a daisy, sit in the seats you thought were yours.

That answer to my question is offically....no. We tried to tip our guide at the end of the night and they flat out refused to accept. They certainly earned it though.

No Six Flags employee is allowed to accept tips from guests...so they technically did the correct thing.

I know this is old, but rides did they have for the carnival, and what town was this?
