So this has bugged me for a while and since I never took a ride down BR I wanted to know when it "opened", when it closed and why? Budget reasons? Any chance of it ever coming back? Any videos? Buccaneer Battle is open in October and this is not? Can't they just turn off the water falls?
I'm not sure when it exactly opened, my guess being in the early 1990's since I remember it being there in the late 1990's. They stopped doing it after Hurricane Katrina, because of sensitivity of everything that happened. I'm pretty sure you can understand that with the name and what occurred it was deemed inappropriate after that.
Pics on this site have Blood River still running in 2003 so it must have stopped soon after that (04-05). Maybe it wasn't that popular? Just like I'm sure Buccaneer Battle is not now?
It's because the skeletons were riding the ride more than real people. Seriously, you have to ask. This is October. This isn't July 4th. It's stupid to run a water ride in October. It's makes no sense at all.

I am sure most would rather ride Blood River. You always get soaked on BB whereas Blood River/Rapids at times just a little wet. Mod Edit: fixed excessive grammar/spelling mistakes

Where did you hear that Katrina crap? I think the reason they stopped doing it is just a logistical reason as it's getting cold and few people are riding it. In addition to that, since it's getting cold and the temperature fluctuates a lot, the water could begin to freeze and ruin the ride. I'm sure precautions would be taken to try to avoid that situation if the temperature drops enough for a few hours, but they don't want to be stuck with that ride still operating and temperatures below freezing.
If you can find a reputable link to something backing up that it was a Katrina related thing, I'll film myself eating a crow and post it here.
I'm sure Katrina had nothing to do with it maybe staffing issues? Maybe next year Buccaneer Battle will be closed too. would love to see it back for 50th anniversary.
No BB was open on Sunday. I rode it. Unless for some reason I was on a crazy LSD trip and I thought I was riding it while instead i was washing my hands. Also it was 65F and sunny, which must have been warm enough to make people want to ride it.

Well, that is 15 or so degrees warmer then it's opening day.
IF the katrina story was true they wouldn't be able to retheme king chaos as blood bath for fright fest. I am thinking lack of staffing. BB is supposed to remian open until november 1st because it is the newest attraction, but occaisionally when zero people ride it in hours it will close.

I think the whole Katrina thing had to do with the location of the ride. The ride was is in the Mardi Gras section of the park (New Orleans). And they just didn't want anything bad to come from that in 05 since the Hurricane happened only a month and half before fright fest. And it was still a pretty big story at the time.
Most likely the same reason they don't call GD Hellevator anymore...because of the press.
I wonder why all the water rides were all closed for Fright Fest? Only Buccanner Battle was open. Anyone know? Mod Edit: Cleaned up post, please use correct grammar when posting.
I agree I think Blood River should definately make a come back. Bucaneer Battle is a cool ride dont get me wrong. But Blood River is a lot drier than BB. Every time I went on during the regular season I got soaked. Roarin' Rapids has gotten better with the waterfall over the cave, but those 2 final waterfalls NEVER MAKE IT OVER THE BOAT!!!!! People are screaming on this ride because of this and all you really have to do is look and see. Not like Cedar Point or Islands Of Adventure.
Actually with all the props in the water and porus stone walls on the ride, they probably don't want to have to powerwash the red dye out of all that just to impress the like 50 riders it got in the month of october.

The other water rides at the park are significantly older than Buccaneer Battle, so it could be possible that there is some new technology (or at least more recent) that allows it to stay open in colder temperatures as opposed to water rides built before it.
I know it's only some water, pipes, and pumps, but there's some weird stuff they can do with it thermodynamically to keep the water from freezing or damaging the ride if it gets too cold.
