As of two weeks ago, i94 was a real mess, I was heading north on a Saturday and I still sat in bumper to bumper traffic for a good couple of miles. I also seem to remember the express lane running from construction start to Grand Ave. where it lets you off.

Crossing I-94 on Grand Ave can be a mess at times, they are I think still running only 2 or 3 lanes. I haven't been by there in weeks.

It's been a ************ for the past year or so over there. This is nothing new. Traffic around there seems better now than it has been in the past though.

There are many way to go around it.

If you are going south you can take Hwy 41 which separates off I94. Then take a right HWY 21 follow until you come across Grand Ave. Also saves you $1.50 :D

Going North:
On I94 Exit right onto Belvidere road, turn left on Oplaine Rd and continue to either turn left of Washington Street (south entrance) -OR- continue to Grand Ave.

coming from route 12 from the south

N on 12
R on South Main St.
R on 176
L on Schank Rd
Stay on Schank, it becomes 83 N (or just find a way to get to 83)
R on Peterson
L on Rt. 45 (or find way to 45)
R on 120
L on N Hunt Club Rd
R on Washington

Go to the back entrance or...

Continue to 21 and take a L
L on Grand
and thats the way to the main ,

And no construction!

That's the a take most the time,
When exiting, I go out Washington Rd then head North on 21.
Going North:
On I94 Exit right onto Belvidere road, turn left on Oplaine Rd and continue to either turn left of Washington Street (south entrance) -OR- continue to Grand Ave.

Going north on the tri-state- a dozen orange construction signs 2ftx4ft directing you to exit on Belvidere RD (120) heading west then on exit off to Milwaukee Ave. (21)
At the spotlight turn left heading north on Milwaukee Ave. (21) to Washington Rd Stoplight turn left and right at the Six flags Dr. Stoplight and your in the Parking Lot the back way :)

Just reverse the directions to get back on to the tri-state.

Just stay away Grand Ave. Bridge at all cost until its finish in the fall'09 Hopefully before Fight Fest opens when Record Crowds show up at the park.

Supposedly one way to get out of those tickets is to spray hairspray on your plates ;)

..never tried it though.

Also, do not take Grand Ave exit (heading north) on 94. The ramp is so messed up it is almost like trek-track with a bunch of bunny hills. I though I was going to bottom out and then crash into the wall. Why cant Illinois build a road for once?

You know, it must be a Chicago area problem. I drove from the age of 16-23 in the central IL area and something southern IL and lived there until last August. Roads would go 10-15 years with no work (even longer according to my family) and never have a single hole. In that entire time I've never seen roads as bad as around here. It simply stunned me that a road would be open with no warnings where there were foot deep potholes that were about a foot in diameter. Even more stunning was to see them patched up, but not even to the top of the hole, thus leaving a small pothole. I get they use an un-godly amount of salt (another rant there), but still. Oh well, those IDOT worker need to be making huge money taking breaks and holding signs.

^ It just sucks and pisses me off that I have to pay all these BD tolls and drive on all these crappy roads that just kill my tires and my car. By driving on those roads I probably already took a year, or more, of life out of my car. And its not like I can just "not use them".

And then up in Wisconsin we pay our high taxes and have our nice roads and nobody has to pay tolls to drive on them. And theres these Illinois (FISH  ) drivers that drive like @ss holes, causing accidents and drive on them for free.

In not saying anything needs to be done in our state...but they really need to do something in Illinois. Why do you think so many people from out of state hate Illinois so much ;)

Its called living in a major metropolitan area. People in LA, NY, Philly, etc all drive like a**hats too. You need to drive agressively in order to survive driving in the city. Its not all cheese & crackers like in Wisconsin :).

/\ Especially with your breaking 50 feet behind the car in front of you and coming to a sudden stop when someone hits their breaks lightly on I-5 and I-405. Man, you're going to cause an accident and everyone in LA will hate you, especially with those Illinois plates.

/\ Easy for you to say having never driven in LA before to experience the traffic going 70 then coming to a dead stop right away.

The Traffic sucks I was going to Gurnee Mills Monday May 11 and from where we usually get on (By Golf Mill Mall) there was nothing but traffic it SUCKED!!!! GRRRR ARRRRGH!!!! this is bs that they only have 2 lanes open and u have to weave in and out of traffic. Usually from my house we can get to SFGAm in 30-45 minutes not this time it took us an hour and a half. Can u imagine this during the summer trying to get to the park?!?!? better get up at 4 in the morning. To the person with the alternate route from the south is that near chicago?

If you want to learn how to, you know, drive the right way...
Drive around the city for aroundddd five hours.
Maybe you'll get the hang of it then ;)

The last few days, Washington Street has had flaggers and one lane traffic. Avoid it at all costs until further notice. It took me 30 minutes to get from SFGAm to 41 Friday.

Update from news-sun road work advancing-
http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/newssun/news/1582158,5_1_WA20_GURNEEROADS_S1.article
Some notes-
Good thing is grand avenue bridge over tollway getting ready to pour concrete & finish in late July.
Washington road from 41 to 21 -one lane finish both sides. A good route to use from the south.
In August work starts on Washington road under Toll-way expands to 4 lanes.

edit- Work has started to the north of border,It's down to 2 lanes each way.

I have yet to be affected by this but if I do decide to pace bus to the park and there is traffic there will be one pissed guy on the bus. It was worse last year than this for me and people I talk to.

After my trip there I have respect for city driving.

Also, its not like I don't know how to drive in the city (ive been doing it for years)...its just very frustrating.
