Official Buccaneer Battle/2009 Attraction Thread

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby Coastermonkey61 on August 22nd, 2008, 4:40 pm
For those who think a giant mega-coaster is on the way, it's time to get off what you're smoking. Unless Six Flags has plans of a mega-coaster chain of coasters that will be cloned, GAm isn't getting one. The last 5 roller coasters GAm has received are clones of coasters elsewhere. Now, look at the last two coasters Six Flags created that are clones. Dark Knight and Tony Hawk's Big Spin. Two smaller, more family oriented coasters, the direction this company wants to go (whether we think it's a good direction or not). Not too mention mega-coasters cost loads of money, something that Six Flags doesn't have. To make more money, the company needs two things, advertising profits and families to come to the park. Families spend the most money of any group of people that go to parks. This is why we're more than likely going to see a more family oriented water attraction in Vu's/SWF's spot, and a separate entrance and admission price for HH. If the park was smart, they'd have a water park ticket, an amusement park ticket, and a combo ticket. They'd make a slew of money off of that that right now they're not getting.

Most of us here want a big, fast, tall mega-coaster to come next. But let's face it, Six Flags is no longer aiming their product at us right now. They're going after families. And until Six Flags works its way out of the red, or caves and starts selling off the parks, we're gonna have to deal with it.

Six Flags is not aiming at *just* families. They are going after families, thrill seekers, and tweens. Each park has been evaluated for what they need to create a good balance.

As far as a "mega coaster" in development for any park, I have heard grumblings that Six Flags has been researching the Dive Machine. We may even see one come to a Six Flags park soon.

Don't also discount a third wooden coaster. Six Flags St. Louis just received their third woodie.

Take a good look around Six Flags Great America and ask yourself "What are we lacking in for families, thrill seeks, and tweens." If you can figure that out then you might have just answered your own question.

^^^ Robb does have a good point there. A new woodie was never out of the question in my book I actually think it would be perfect. I think that EK was a test to see if it attracted families, thrill seekers, and tweens.

I haven't bothered to read a post in this topic yet, but let me take a guess, 95% of you think we're getting a new coaster?

Yeah, you're wrong.

I doubt we will end up with another wooden coaster anytime soon. I think for a place like great America which is smaller than many of the other Six Flags parks, 2 is all you can expect. For some reason our park has had no real desire to expand and at 123 acres it's way smaller compared to the other parks. The sooner we lose another ride the sooner we will get one. They probably think 12 coasters is nothing to cry over. I kinda agree. I think the sooner we lose Iron Wolf 9Which most people complain about) or Whizzer (Which costs a lot to maintain and replace parts) the sooner they will think seriously about a new coaster. Obviously the splash battle ride will not attract thrill seekers so you know they'll want to do something for us later on.

Maybe they are planning a dive machine for 2010 or 2011. Who knows? Just because we won't get one next year doesn't mean we won't get one in a few years. Of course, there won't be a lot to drive the thrill seekers into the park until then. What people need to do is complain more. Write to them more. Call them more. Stop visiting the park so many times in one season. Buy less. If they see the numbers decrease they'll maybe realize you can't favor just one demographic all the time.

No way, 4D coasters are humoungus (the largest track/train span of any coaster anywhere) and Wolf is locked by the midway/Fiddlers Fling, the admin building, and wardrobe. Both of which are too large to be moved.

I haven't read this post in a while. Why do you think iron wolf is going? It's the first stand up coaster, isnt it? And a lot of you will disagree with me in this, but i'd rather see whizzer gone than iron wolf. Whizzer is a lot to mantain, and iron wolf is one of the real thrills.

Whizzer was about to be taken out for Superman, and pretty much everyone screamed at them to not do it. So they took out Shockwave. They would not dare try and take Whizzer out again. But in retrospect, Superman would have been a much better ride in Whizzer's spot, with the pond and the terrain there and whatnot.

Iron Wolf isn't popular anymore. It isn't thrilling anymore. It seems as though most people ride it because the line is short. I'm not saying take it down, but it needs a serious overhaul. I'm not sure anyone can ride that thing and say they had a great, pain-free time. But if a coaster was to be removed, I'd bet a lot of money on IW being at the top of the list. Demon and Whizzer have a much more storied history to the park itself.

And Iron Wolf is not the first stand-up coaster, it's the first Bolliger and Mabillard coaster ever, so it holds value to them. But they're about the only people that have value in this ride anymore. But there's a big reason why no more stand-up coasters are built, and there hasn't been a new one in 10 years. The novelty of standing up during the ride does not outweigh the overall pain of the experience.

I get that everytime! I love Iron Wold. But I am 6' 5" so my head doesn't hit the restraint one bit...that maybe why. I got my first ride on it when I was 7 and I loved it. There was only a few years where my height caused some pain but nothing major.

If Shockwave didnt have an accident SUF would be in Whizzers spot right now. They have the track-layout plans for SUF in Hometown Square posted up on the wall in one of the offices. Would not have been an easy fit as it stretched out all the way to the railroad tracks near Bulls hammerhead. SFGAm wont get rid of Whizzer now, still a very popular ride.

Each park has been evaluated for what they need to create a good balance.

Each park was evaluated for what will drive their attendance in relation to cost. SFMM needs flats considering they just removed the few they had, yet they are getting a new coaster anyway. SFGAm has a different market (and affluent north-Chicago families) so adding water attractions they hope can keep people away from the Dells.

Don't also discount a third wooden coaster. Six Flags St. Louis just received their third woodie.

I wouldnt count on that.

I heard from the lady that answers your calls when you call that those animals get painted every year. Every off-season.

They rotate, some of them are painted during the offseason. It takes a long time to do those animals and SFGAm only has a few fulltime painters and a lot of painting projects. The Carousel was repainted in 2002 but it does need a mechanical rehab badly. You should hear that thing run when the park is empty and the musics not on, the ride is so loud its scary...and the reason it runs extremely slow compared to most carousels is because they are being extra careful with the main bearing, which last year was in desperate need of replacement (after being in use since 1976) and luckily they were able to buy one quickley (the only one in the world not being used) because theres no company that makes them and to get one specially made would take over a year and cost a few hundred thousand dollars.

I would be all for getting a clone of EK. It would easily take over top wooden coaster at GA in my books.

Of course you want a new coaster, but a new coaster in 2009, haha. Were stuck with splash battle.

We are? I didn't hear anything official about a splash battle.

Demon and Whizzer have a much more storied history to the park itself.

The two originals left still standing from opening day in 76. Plus, not only is The Whizzer the perfect coaster for families who want to introduce the children to their first "big" coaster, it is one of only two Schwarzkopf speedracer coasters remaining. The chances of either The Whizzer, or The Demon getting removed soon are slim to none.

Um lets use something called wait time to show which the people would miss more!

Iron Wolf: 25min
Whizzer : 1hr 15min

.... I wonder which is going first? Hmmmmm....

What is so sacred about Demon? No one ever discusses the possibility of removing it. I'd prefer Whizzer, and probably Wolf, stay instead of Demon.

I know, I was just stating my opinion. Whizzer might be a classic, but Iron is B&M's first, and more thrilling. And whizzer's turn is very painfull if you don't know how to ride it. It smashes your ear and gives you a huge headache.

Ok, enough ride removal discussion. Nothing is being removed for a 4D, so get over it. Unless SF puts a sign in front of a ride other than SSA that says "Future site of new attraction," or releases a statement about a ride removal, I don't want to see another post about it in this thread. Back on topic please.
