Hey guys just wondering if anyone knows why occasionally on the 2nd time up the back tower I will get no holding brake. It always makes me worried that the ride is malfunctioning.
It has happened to me twice now, and its a bit of a rip since that is one the main thrills of the ride.
Does this happen regularly? I asked two of the ride ops and they didn't know what i was talking about or anything i was saying basically. I rarely get a friendly response from any of these ride ops when i ask questions.
It happened to me once this season, and I saw it happen a few more times later on that day too. I'm not sure what it is, but I actually like it without the stop on the back spike.
It only happens when the train doesnt go high enough on the back spike. The computer senses how high the train is and if it isn't high enough it doesn't "grab" the train for structural reasons if I'm not mistaken. The reason it doesn't go as high is because (and I might be mistaken on this) the computer bases its launch speed on the weight of the previous train. Therefore if you have a really light train then a heavier one next cycle it probably wouldn't grab on the back spike.
Remember, there's nothing but air beneath the chair.
I can not imagin how much stress the "holding of the train" must put on that piece of track, i mean if you notice, the Support Beam for that vertical piece of track stops just before the holding breaks, so i can only imagine that it grabs a heavy train, how much stress that track must have not to lean to that side without breaking, you can see the track sway back and forth slightly after it releases the train again.

yeah the track does move alot, its a bit nerve wrecking standing there and watching the metal frames shaking as you are about to go on the ride lol
Yeah there is a lot of stress on the track. Before the extra supports were added the track would REALLY sway. You could see it sway from across the park. And yes, if the train does not go high enough, or goes too high it wont grab...to protect the LIM and the track. The same way Deja Vu would miscatch.
I just now got back from great america (8/10), and it didn't stop on the tower. I was about to make a topic on this, lol. When did they change the supports?
I never noticed the extra supports until you brought it up. And when did V2 start not holding some trains because I was there like a few weeks ago and it never happened?
As someone mentioned above, if the train doesn't make it high enough on the spike, the breaks won't hold it...it's more or less a safety precaution as we sure don't need the spike snapping like toothpicks if too much force is put on them.
From working on the crew in years past, it happened quite a bit, but there's really nothing maintenance can do . I remember it would happen the most after a downtime/ride reset.
I am surprised that a lim has not completely blown yet this year because that's at least a 3-4 week downtime right there.
