Fright Fest 2008

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby acm21 on August 1st, 2008, 11:55 am
It's officially August and we are about two months away from FF. (God this year went by fast)
Based on Past Years, what changes do you want and what do you want kept that was added in 2007?
Also post any pictures of decorating throughout the park.

RISE OF THE DEMON! Better, longer, and more scarier that was the best addition last year.

Well....

- I would like to See Hurricane Harbor used for FF weather a Hayride or a Walk Through in the Lazy River or Something
- LOVE AT FIRST FRIGHT LIVE!!! (If there's Video Shows, I'll go Crazy)
- The Dark Knight in Pitch Black and Techno Music
- Funhouse Express Film in Pictorium
- Some of the Flat Rides get longer ride Time
- The Train would be Working and have a good plot
- If its warm enough, operate the Water Rides (Anyone Remember Blood River)
- A Magic Show Please!!!
- Run another coaster beside American Eagle Backwards (Like Demon or Viper)
- A Comical Graveyard in Hurricane Bay like Cedar Point's Graveyard
- 1/2 Priced Food, Drink, & Games (It Happened before)
- One Night Open till Midnight (Assuming the Village of Gurnee takes the ##### out of their @$&#'@)
- Some Kind of Performance in the Southwest Rockin Amphitheater (Not the Hypnotist)

Eagle doesn't run backwards for fright fest, and chances are neither will anything else.

Half Price weekend SFGAm lost their ass, though it was their fault for not promoting it.

Rest of the stuff sounds cool though.

I got some info on the freakshow, it will change this year, so far looks like a Solo show with Professor Chumley. Ses Carny has some stuff he needs to deal with back home and wont make it this year, and Ses and Wyck are a team, so neither will be here this year. Though I'm sure the professor can manage to gross people out just fine on his own :)

Never know though, maybe Toad can be brought in to MC or something.

Ya, i was there for half price day, it was November 2nd, a few years back, it was colder then hell, most of us had sweaters and long sleeves on as the temp was around 20-30 degrees and there was about only 300 or more people in the park, not even that, because every single ride was a walk on. Every ride opt said "If no one is in your row when you return to station, you may re-ride" except BATMAN, who states "Re-rides are not permitted and you must exit the ride and reenter through the entrance line!!

Other then that, six flags made a loss on that day, due to NON promotion, but on my defense, it was nice to have half price food and all the walk ons i could handle

Actually there were only about 15 Rides open if that. Also There was free parking and Admission was $15.00. I think the reason why they did that was because they had a large stock of food & Drinks that they needed to get rid of and thats why they did it. Just a Guess.

I think all the major rides were open that weekend, all the coasters and major flats, no kids areas, no water rides and most other flats were closed. Surprisingly Deja Vu was open despite the sub freezing temps and I remember sitting on the train for at least 10 mins waiting for enough people to fill the train, as they wouldnt dispatch it with anything less than a nearly full train as they didn't want to have to drag out Ye Olde Winch. I think they were trying to copy what PKI had been doing quite successfully for years, as PKI always did half price post closing weekend and they drew good crowds. I don't know if it's still the same, but SFGAm used to sell leftover food stock to employees at cost after the season ended as a way to get rid of it.

-Yes, I would like to see HH used for FF too, but I don't see it happening.
-I would never want TDK to ever run with techno music, that's just stupid.
-Funhouse express sounds good
-Since ride waits are longer for fright fest, flats won't get a longer ride time with the exception of Condor because it never has a long line anway.
-I don't see why the train needs to be closed. Remember though, if it does open again, no ghost train crossing effect.
-I definately agree the water rides should open because last year, it was in the high 60's and 70's but they were still closed.
-They will never run Demon or AE backwards and Viper's trains probably aren't meant to go backwards either. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
-I don't think they'll have a half price night and we all know why but hey, why not?
-1 night open until midnight would be sweet.

My ideas:
-Turn on Demon's waterfall on Fridays
-Get more actors in Orleans Place AKA-7 sins
-Expand Rise of The Demon
-Keep the pumpkin guy at the front. That was sweet!
-Have a Joker actor and clowns walk around TDK
-Put more Skywhirl cages in Area 51 that you can actually sit in

Oh, and I'm gonna miss Superstition. Oh well.

^ They can't add more Sky Whirl cabins. All the other ones except for those four were scrapped in the 2004-05 offseason. Also, Demon's waterfall can not run unless they pretty much rebuild the entire rock structure. Right now, the structure can no longer support the weight of the water.

Character-wise, looks exactly the same as last year:
http://www.jpmproductions.com/SFGAChara ... fault.aspx

Area 51 is staying in County Fair again this year, even though, in my opinion, Area 51 was pathetic last year compared to the Hometown Square years

As far as the train goes, nothing about the train is mentioned on JPM's website. That leaves 3 possibilities:
1. Train theming and actors are done all by SFGAm (Like Hold-Up Express in 2006)
2. Train open, but no theming (Like 2002)
3. Train closed (Like last year)
I have a feeling I know which possibility is correct though :(

I hope they bring back the Elvira simulator ride again.
As for the rest of FF, its a joke, and not scary in the least!!!
They need to be open much later than 11:00pm and SFGAM can do so if they want to. If there is local ordinances preventing it they can use the political muscle they have and campaign cash to get it done.
They need to shelve alomst everything they have and start from scratch with all new theme's for the event. The event/decorations have chnaged very little over the years, They need to hire much better scare-actors and creative people to make the event better.
But sadly im sure little money will be spent on the event so it will be the same ol stuff we have seen for a long time, so for me its main purpose is that I get to ride coasters a few extra friday nights and hope its cold so less people are in the park.

Is SSA even still operational? If not, I don't think you will see Elvira.

They need to hire much better scare-actors and creative people to make the event better.

Hows that for a knock on the workers of JPM. Take that. Bam!!

So in essence, what you are saying Bob is to scrap everything, fire JPM, and start over. Then what, in another 5-10 years or so, do the same thing all over when that gets stale. Where in the world would the money come from to do something like that? There has been additions to FF, though nothing major.

What political muscle are you referring to?

I thought it was a good attempt...but perhaps because I was one of the leads at Demon that just kind of stared in awe when people would kind of stop and look both ways until I told them...there's no train coming you're fine.

Every year, there's budget cuts at the last minute that take into effect and certain things don't end up happening...it's hard to say what will/will not happen this year. I guess I'll wait until October and see what happens.

Bob...what the hell. Campaign cash? Six Flags can't pay to fix the waterfall, much less bribing a town council into letting the park stay open later, which probably would just lose more money for the park. How many families stay until 10PM? How many would stay past midnight?

The reason why Great America can't stay open later is because of the Nearby Locals that live right next to the park and complain because they have no life. People complain all the time, even when its stupid. For Example

- An Office complex tried to stop California's Great America from building a Wooden Coaster because of the noise
- Alton Towers can't have anything above tree level or anything loud because of the Locals
- Legoland in UK had to have enclosed cars because the locals got annoyed 4 years after it opened
- People at O'Hare Airport complain about the noise
- People at Wrigly field complain about the Noise

Anyway. For Fright Fest, how about if they did what Universal Studios did with HHN 17 and theme the Haunted Houses to Warner Bros. Properties.

^ Haha those people who complain by O'hare and Wrigley are idiots!
If you decided to move RIGHT NEXT TO AN AIRPORT, you should expect some noise!

As for the Ghost Train effect, it got old. I remember me and my friends crossing by Demon at least 4 times and every time we were stopped by the "Ghost Train". It just got a little annoying.

Yes, that is exactly what im saying, fire JPM and start over!! JPM does ok for a high school level scare house, but not anywhere near the quality of what is suppossed to be a world class amusement park. Heck alot of carny wokers doing there every day job is scarier. SFGAM needs to hire some people who run halloween events at Knott's/USF to redo SFGAM pathetic attempt to run a halloween event. You cant do it all in one year, but start now and hopefully over several year they can replace the same old boring crap we have every year with new items, then every year change parts to have something fresh every year.

As for money, after this year dont make it part of the season pass, you can have season pass discounts but make it a separate admission event and make it worth the money!!!

SFGAM provides alot of money for the community and im sure they make donations to candidates and if they want something bad enough, im sure they can spread enought cash/political helpt to get it done, we arent talking chicago where millions would be needed to frease the right palms. As a comprise you could shutdown some of the rides in the park earlier that are located near the housing across from V2/Superman.

The trains operating schedule this year is memorial day weeken - labor day weekend, so it wont be running during Fright Fest.

Fright Fest may not be Haunt of Halloween Horror Nights, but it still draws extremely large crowds so I wouldnt expect to see any drastic changes.

That just gets rid of the point of a season pass. Fright Fest is part of the season.

/\ I think that idea was in reference to Knotts Halloween Haunt, which their Annuall Passholders are not allowed to use it for admission, they must pay the admission with everyone else.

However that would be a horrible idea for Six Flags considering theyve allowing season passholders in since they started the event, also FF admission is a major selling point for season pass sales.

Knotts opens the park up for regular admission during the day though (where passholers holders are allowed) and then closes down, then a few hours later re-opens for Halloween Haunt. So technically there are still no blackout dates...

Bob O. I think you're looking at this thing the wrong way. You go to a park like Universal or Knotts that has the budget to put out a new show every year, it's going to change, it's going to be different and it'll attract different crowds, also because it caters SOLELY to adults. There's nothing kiddie about their haunts. Six Flags still has to make the park semi-family oriented, even during the scary times. They seem to be trying to ween away the kids slowly but surely by making it clear that after...I forget the time...anyway, after that time, it's going to get scary. JPM is not the problem, it's the familys that are the problem. I'm not saying get rid of all familys during Fright Fest, but there should be some way to make sure that after their designated time, the small ones are gone from the park so that scareactors can go all out and not have to worry about parents getting in their faces for scaring their children. I went there last year and saw a mom in one of the vampires faces because her kid was walking by the character and got scared. Like I said, JPM is not the problem, it's that park itself, and the small children there after hours. I'm sure if this were a seperate ticket event like Knotts or Universal, you would see some different and more interesting changes. Keep JPM. I think they're great. For god's sake...did you SEE what happens when the park tries to do it themselves? Does anyone remember the Holdup Express from a couple years ago and how horrible that was? And how lame they were when they were trying to scare people who were walking across the train tracks between their shows? I rest my case.

Wasn't a smilir topic like "Fright Fest 2008 What Changes do the People want?" posted a few months back? I know something like that was already in place. This is redundant. However, it would be cool if more spiders like the one I saw once on AE were used more on the rides. Roaring Rapids should be used. Was it open last year? Blood River is a cool idea. They can always turn the waterfalls off. I wonder when they drain the water in RR.

No its not open during FF anymore.

I wonder when they drain the water in RR.

The water is drained nightly during the season into a storage reseviour behind the ride and the water is removed yearly (last year it was before FF, probably the same this year).

That's a lot of water to drain and fill up everyday. Why do they drain it nightly? Another question: What do they use to protect the water slides at HH during the winter?
