Just pointing out there are already threads about this, but they are old, so I'll put in my two cents here.
I think that this development couldn't have happened at a better time for Six Flags. Consumer confidence is terrible, and people are looking for other ways to spend time rather then a big vacation. The North Shore is a pretty Rich and well off area, but for those who aren't in the big bucks, I think this is great.
I think families will view this as an opportunity to spend multiple days in the area. Spending a day or Two at Six Flags, Spend a Day Downtown, Spend a Day at Gurnee Mills, and a day lounging around at the indoor waterpark. And I think it will appeal to both vacationers, bringing them close to the park, and locals who don't necessarily want to drive all the way home after a long day at the park. Someone who maybe lives on the North Side of Milwaukee or the South Side of Chicago who doesn't want to drive a far distance.
It also opens the door for more developments in the area. Gurnee is home to loads of dining and shopping options, not to mention a few hotels already, and don't forget Monster Gold, another lesser attraction, but a fun way to spend some time.
I really think it will have an impact on Six Flags Attendance this year, especially in the months of May, September, and October. People can Spend a day out in the cold with Roller Coasters one day, then spend a day in this tropical environment indoors at a waterpark, or spa.
Not to mention the business clientele they will bring in with the large amount of meeting rooms and whatnot, and other "Big Groups" like family reunions, and proms, and other gatherings.
It also gives parents something to do. If they aren't into the coaster thing, they can send their tweens across the street while they lounge and have fun without the kids.
I should mention, however, that I think this will have a negative impact on Hurricane Harbor. Not a Big one, but an impact none the less. I've heard they are paying their lifeguards a significantly larger amount then Six Flags, and I think that any families who stay at the Resort solely because it's next to six flags will take advantage of the free indoor park, and spend their time in the dry park at Six Flags.
But, Overall I Think is the best thing that could have happened, at a perfect time. Let's Hope I'm right.
