Convincing my mom......

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby Demon_07 on January 6th, 2008, 12:22 am
For years, my mom has been scared to go on any REAL coasters. I got her on Viper once. She hated it so I'm currently trying to get her on Demon. She's afraid of the corkscrews (Which is something new to her) Do you think there is any effective way I can convince her to go on it?

1. Has she ridden any other coasters at SFGAm?

2. Does she have a fear of safety

3. Does she have any childhood/previous memories which are frightful?

I mean, if someone has a fear about safety and they have had bad experiences, you cant change there mind. And they might not be able to change there mind. Cause every ride that she is forced to go on will make it worse.

But you have a while until opening so I would just slowly talk about it to her. And show her some video/photos of on-rides from YouTube or something. Because Demon is a very gentle ride, at least for me, and there really inst anything that would scare her once she got off.

1: She's ridden whizzer, ragin' cajun, and viper at sfgam. She is comfortable with whizzer and ragin' cajun but not viper.

2:She doesn't have a fear of safety but she is somewhat afraid of drops and she's only been on a single looping coaster before.

3:No, as a child, she never rode any roller coasters.

It'll take some convincing and she doesn't trust my judgement much after getting her to go on Viper. lol

Some people just don't like going on big roller coasters. Kind of sucks, doesn't it? Neither of my parents will go near one which is why I never went to the park until the September I was eleven (2005, my friend took me) and even then it took me an entire off-season of deep thinking (I made the mistake of going on Viper first and it scared the crap out of me. Bad mistake) to get REALLY into coasters. I guess just do your best to convince her but some people are just unmovable.
Eh.......I got nothing.

If your mom went on Viper and hated what makes you think she would like Demon any better? Unless they have been riding coasters for years, most older people do not do well on coasters when they are older and trying them for the first time. You should take her on Whizzer and she would probably appreciate the story/theming of TDK and its not a real intense ride so that would probably work well. I would reccomend not pushing it though.

Viper is wooden, so she may not of like the rumbling of a woodie (alot of people dont like it). Demon Is very smooth. Just tell her you see 5 year olds, and people that are like 90 years old riding it all the time.

Well, to make matters worse, someone puked after coming off the ride so she didn't take kindly to that. I keep telling her there's only one drop on the ride but she's still afraid.

I think that she is just born with roller coaster fear. Its just like when people have a fear of heights or spiders etc. I doubt very much that you will ever get her un-afraid of coasters.

I don't think that your mom would really like Demon too much. For somebody who has only been on one looping coaster before, it could be intimidating. I have a little brother who if fine on some other coasters, but for some reason he will not try out the Demon because he is just too scared of it.
That brings me to my next point. Try telling her to go on AE. I know that its huge first drop can be very frightening, but other than that it really isn't too bad. Even my mom, who doesn't like anything much scarier than Whizzer and who won't dare go on Demon, loves riding American Eagle. It is a pretty rough ride, but I think that by the end of it she will love it.

Roller Coaster fear is something people have to face themselves. They have to want to ride the ride or else they'll always be afraid of it.

My mom is also afraid of big roller coasters. She liked the Beastie at Kings Island, and didn't really mind Adventure Express. Her favorite ride at Great America is Spacely's; but about 4 years ago, we somehow managed to talk her into riding Demon. She absolutely hated it, and she wouldn't even ride Whizzer after that. She hasn't ridden a roller coaster since, let alone even gone back to Great America since.
Finally Coaster Season!!

Unfortunatley, bugging people about riding coasters when they're afraid of it is going to only get them angry. Let her take her time and encourage her to go on bigger coasters but don't make her. Tell her "just try it once, you might like it!" or tell her you'll buy her something to eat if she does it. Just don't force her. That will make her want to go on the rides less.

Is there really a reason you must make her ride the coasters? Can't you just enjoy the rides and let her enjoy the shows or whatever she does while your there?

Yes there's a reason! She does nothing the whole time. Frankly, I think her season pass is only worth my transportation. I want her to have some fun. If she doesn't like it, fine. It's done with but just give something a chance.

^Until you ride Raging Bull!

^^The most fun your mom can have is not continuously being talked into something she doesn't want to do. If your mom likes the casual rides, you should accept that.
