He said "No more Goliath's" right? Well Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia according to rcdb.com says the ride cost was 20 million. So when he says no more Goliath's he's also saying, no more 20 million dollar coasters.
Since He has been CEO, he has changed his mind several times. So anything could happen. As for Family Friendly. Even a Thrill ride is still Family Friendly. Most 9 and 10 years olds are able to go on all of the coasters. It is for the older kids of the family.
If you think about it works out well. In 2007 we got Wiggles World which is for 2-5 year olds. In 2008 we are getting the Dark Night which is for 5-8 year olds. And then 2008 we get something thrilling for the 9 and up.
^I'd be excited about it...unless it was the reason for Vu's removal...is it? I mean, I know TDK isn't going in the same spot, but are they selling Vu to pay for all the new stuff?
We could sit here all day and paraphrase and reparaphrase what Shapiro said.
BUT, Great America is in a unique situation:
1. Shapiro loves our park, he's stated that several times. He grew up in the Chicagoland area.
2. Great America doesnt NEED anything, but the park management knows what rides work and what rides dont (i.e. B&M' vs. Vekoma)
3. B&M LOVES Great America, we are there springboard so to speak for there coasters. It all started here, so they definately know there roots.
4. Great America is one of the only parks I have been too, where theres a clear mix of family suitable and thrill ride selection. No other park NOT EVEN CP! can boast what we have to offer our guests.
5. This is probably most important, While Shapiro has said there wont be many more Goliath's, we have seen this offseason alone his willingness to add rollercoasters as well as make large capital expenses on them.
So basically it boils down to this. Based on past experience. Great America will get a new large rollercoaster IF: The price is right, The space is available, And the ride is reliable.
Enough with the "Shapiro wont add any big coasters." Six Flags will do what they need to do to be profitable, and that obviosley includes building large, marketable, thrilling roller coasters. Sure he said "No more Goliaths," reason being he was trying to prove a point to anyone that would listen that Six Flags parks were going to change with more emphasis on guest service and family entertainment. Now that they have established this, they will continue to add family attractions but will also start building roller coasters to drive attendance.
The main difference I see between now and back when GAm was getting coasters almost every other year is that they are going to be smart about what coasters they add. They will not add coasters every other year like before (although TDK & a coaster in 09 I guess would break that theory), however they will still add coasters when the time is right.
Another difference is that there will probably be no more piss poor engineered/capacity coasters coming to GAm (ala V2 / DejaVu). Everything the park adds now they will make sure its a reliable attraction and pay great attention to capacity. Mack makes very reliable and highest capacity mouse coasters (both the exact opposite from the Reverchon/Zamperla model the park already has). Six Flags has taken so many hits with night-marish rides that they now are going to make sure NEVER to make those mistakes again (COUGH DEJAVU COUGH X COUGH SUPERMAN THE ESCAPE).....ahem.

Great post! This basically sums up everything stated in the past 3 pages! We'll have to see what comes of Deja Vu and SWF's spots in the future...for now, all we can do is wonder....
Oh, and as for why Magic Mountain is keeping their Deja Vu, it's only cause Shapiro stated that he plans to eliminate that side of the park alltogether...so why demolish it now if it's just going to go in the near future? Don't count on it staying too much longer....
RIP: Trailblazer and Deja Vu...heck, even Alien Encounter

Oh yeah, definaltey gonna get one of those in 2008. Be patient.
Mmmmm, I don't know about 2008 since we're getting TDKCoaster, but we might in 2009! Then again, We did get V2 and Vu in the same year but now Vu is gone. But you might be right. Just like you said, be patient.
Cycamps Said: I'm sure we'll get something larger than Ragin' Cajun and TDK in the near future.
I hope so because ya Raging Bull is fun but now days BIG means over 250/300ft. if not more!

In afterthought, I kinda wish they would've gotten rid of deja vu instead of shockwave. Superman works, but it isn't original, and deja vu is not original either. I like one of a kind awesome things. Shockwave worked, and it tore up the skyline in the way a good coaster should.
I was a little shocked, but not surprised at the removal of deja vu, but i'm not really sad, there are other deja vus, and they are being bought, not demolished, so there's a glint of hope for the future.
Edit for added point:
I'm not so sure the announcement of deja vu's removal should've been after announcing a new coaster. I feel like they could've made a better move by taking away deja vu, letting us all KNOW so that we could make our way to fright fest to ride it one last time (making them fright fest $$$) and then after crushing our spirits announced a new coaster. I think that would've made people more excited for the coaster.
But, maybe they just announced the new coaster first so that we would like them before they took away a fan favourite.
What you don't understand you can make mean anything.

No, Raging Bull is still very big by today's standards. Other than a handful of record breaking coasters almost all today are still built below 200 ft tall. A Hyper coaster is a park's main attraction, and they were very popular to install in the later 90's, but now everyone has one and parks need to diversify their coaster collection, and thats why we see so many shorter rocket coasters, inverts, and woodies being purchased today.
And before I get grilled about this I realize that most Dive coasters are over 200 Ft tall, but they are still nothing compared to the length and elements of a hyper like Raging Bull. Until B&M starts making their layouts a little more exciting they are more like a drop tower with a very long drawn out inversion attached to them, not a park's main attraction.

Am I the only one who was completely happy with what we had? (Until the Vu thing). I was never anticipating a new coaster. I just never had an urge for one. I'm not all for getting the newest, the biggest and the best at my home park. If I want to ride something bigger, I'll go to another park. The coasters (as a whole) at sfgam don't get boring. If I get bored with one, I don't ride it for a few months. Then I get bored with another, so I go back to the one I was bored with and I'm not bored with it anymore. I don't need to have something new every few years. If the park stayed the same for 4 years without anything new, I'd be happy. sfgam is to the point where if they get anything new, they have to take stuff out. Its so crowded and they are cramming TDK in Orleans place. If I had my way, I'd say forget TDK! We don't need it in my opinion.
It was a really neat combo of coasters. It was fun and just right in my opinion. Now that Vu is gone, there will be a missing piece. And nothing will ever be able to fill that void the same as Vu did. I never went to the park when Shockwave was there, but I'm sure that the whole "feeling" of the park changed when it left. That's the way its going to be without Vu.
I'm not saying that I'd never inmy life want sfgam to change...I just really enjoyed everything the way it was and I wish it could have been kept that way for at least a few more years. I don't have to see SUF in 2003, RC one year later etc etc.
/\ Plus they don't have the weather fluctuations like we have here that effect the ride's operations. So it has a good uptime there and doesn't attract very long lines so therefore not many complaints about slow moving lines. Also, all the rides there have slow moving lines, so it is normal that the line is moving slow.
