Well, you can put a CD in a DVD player. If you try it the other way around, it will keep trying to read the disk (it will spin it really fast then stop, spin again, stop, spin again, stop...etc.). If it is really sophisticated, you'll get an error message. Yes, I've tried it.
My DVD player plays CD's Data and Audio, just not ROM's
