The Edge

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

Does anyone have a good picture of the past ride The Edge? This is the best one I could find. Also, does anyone know what went wrong with the ride to make it not run correctly?

From what I have read, I guess a cable snapped which allowed the car to drop and severly injured people on the ride and people waiting in the station.

From what I've heard/read, the ride was not equipped with anti-rollback safety measures. The car somehow became dislodged as it neared the top of the lift corridor causing it to plummet back down the shaft and land on an empty car in the loading area. That was a lucky break in two respects: 1) the car was empty, 2) it broke the fall. The riders were sent to the hospital for injuries, but they all survived and made full recoveries. They were even given shirts that read "I survived The Edge"

Here's a picture

I'm pretty sure that's the one that was at SFGAM, just renamed. Of course, they also retro-fit the ride with anti-rollback protection

Here's an explanation that another poster had during a previous thread regarding this ride:

"As for the accident, a few changes happened to it, and all others like it. For some reason the car was(intentionally I believe) stopped about 3/4 of the way up the tower, and in the process of restarting the ride the car somehow disengauged from the lifting mechanism and if fell down the lift shaft crashing(luckily) into an empty car, and that car provided enough give to save the 3 riders (all had ruptured kidneys, broken pelvis, along the the usual extreme G-Froce related stuff that you'd see in most car accidents). So the changes were, they added an anti rollback to the lift shaft, and they changed the programming so there is never more than one car in the lift shaft any time (as if that emtpy car had people in it, it would have been much worse)."
I'm gonna twist ya, and I'm gonna flip ya. Every time you squeal, I'm just gonna go faster and harder.

The ride now sits at Geauga Lake and it runs very rarely. It was up a few times this year but as of late, it breaks down at least 3 or 4 times a day. It is a maintenance disaster. Between the SFGAm and GL era it was at another park, Rocky Point Park in RI. Right now it is purple and green, named Mr. Hyde's Nasty Fall. The paint looks really bad and it is slowly starting to show the old blue and orange from the "Edge" days. I searched on google and found this picture.

*Zach, who has been stuck on this ride for over 45 minutes because of mechanical problems, but has also received exit passes for X-Flight from this terrible wait*
