Giant Drop?

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby MrRy10 on June 1st, 2011, 10:21 pm
Does anyone know why they park Giant drops cars sometimes at the top when theirs a big line. So basically only 3 would be operating, and the other 3 cars would not be operating. I've been seeing it lately,i wonder why they do that

Quick answer is that there is not the extra staff member(s) necessary for all six cars to operate. From what I remember it took two operators to run 3 cars, and atleast 3 operators to run both sides (all six cars).

That is usually the case when you see rides running at low capacity (or sometimes not at all)

Yeah Ive always wondered that too. Hmph good question. Although I never rode Giant Drop during Frightfest last year and a friend told me that they did something special to it? Does anyone know what special thing they did to it? The only thing I can think of them doing different is that they dropped each car one by one in order but IDK if thats what new thing that was done to Giant Drop. Does anyone have a clue or know?

They dropped one by one, it just looked and sounded eerie.
As for the parking cars on top, I've heard that ever since the superman incident, parks with rides of this design are being uber sticklers when it comes to safety and the slightest thing wrong they'll take it out of commission.

Giant Drops will almost always park out of use cars at the top. Protects the cables, better for the gearbox and keeps the cars off the dampers at the bottom that can loose their charge if they are compressed for to long. Back in late 1997 the landing on Giant Drop was a bone jarring experience because of that, surprised no one got hurt :)

After the Kentucky accident they are more cautious with wind to protect the cables and to prevent an accident.

Was next in line yesterday and 3 maintenance workers were inspecting the cables because of wind, took 3 min and I got my ride.

They were going up the tower and cables snapped and they were coming down and wrapped around the girl and her friends. But they got them off and then the cable wrapped around her legs and then it dropped and her feet got cut off.Cables are razor sharp and will cut you very easy.

The worst part is that poor girl couldn't make the height requirements for any of the rides for the rest of the day.

That accident is no laughing matter. You have to be really evil or masochistic or have some psychological issues to find any humor in that. I hope that girls feet were able to be stitched back on her. I'm glad park safety has improved over the years. Thats one of the reasons some people I know won't go to the park, they're concerned over their safety while on coasters.

But people laughing and joking about Osama Bin Ladan is acceptable and humane.
(I laughed and joked about Osama as well, don't get me wrong) :-p

They were able to put one foot back on the other was too mangled. She got a non disclosed settlement.

Good. They better have gotten a settlement. But anyway, back on topic here, I hope they do that cool thing they did for Frightfest this year again. I never got to go on during that time so it would be interesting to feel nervous, one by one, each cart dropping and you waiting, for your turn to drop down to hell. lol.

Yeah, that does seem like it would be fun. Especially when you're on the last car down, after you hear everyone else screaming...

I was in the last car down and it took away the surprise of the drop, but still cool.
I had no idea that was a different program I thought something was wrong with the ride.

Is there like a small tease drop because I remember one time where I went on and the car dropped about 2 inches and I thought it was dropping for good but then 10 seconds later it actually dropped for real. It was a small jerk down.

If it's at the top, it's disabled for wind or some other issue. If it was due to the crowds in the park, they would still be at the bottom, but also disabled.

Instead of having each car on GD drop in sequenical order, how about this?
They send 4 to 6 cars up (works best with all six), and then they hold all six up there, and drop them one by one in a RANDOM order. You never know who will go first, who will be next, etc. Olus, it will be different each time you ride GD. Random is good for FF.
