CHANG WATCH: The Official Topic

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby BrianPlencner on June 16th, 2010, 1:23 pm
Ok..first off, the pic posted is the exact same piece of track that I have in the picture that I took. The only difference is mine was looking west into the park from OUTSIDE the fence. And yes, I took my picture down from Facebook, due to pressure from the park. The park claims I was tresspassing.

Anyway, I just got an e-mail from the Village of Gurnee. SFGAm is on the agenda for the June 21st Village Board Regular Meeting Agenda

G. NEW BUSINESS
2. Approval of Ord. 2010 - granting a certain variation from the zoning regulations pursuant to the Conditional Use Permit granted under Ordinance No. 80-25, adopted May 19, 1980, relating to Six Flags Great America.

They have not updated the web page yet. But, when they do, this will be the link

http://www.gurnee.il.us/village_board/vb_agendas.html

Meeting is 7:30 PM on Monday, June 21st at the Gurnee Village Hall.

I will be in attendance at that meeting.

From the angle of the exit ramp, the piece seems higher than it really is. Take a look for yourself when leaving the line. It's quite interesting.

It appears that the Daily Herald seems to know that Chang is coming based on the info that has been stated here after the Zoning Board meeting.

Thank you for the link to the Daily Herold article for this "gem" in the comment section
Six Flags does not need a new coaster to attract people and make a profit. It needs to shut down for a year, and revitize the entire park....By the way, get rid of the prayer area for the muslims and bring back the dolphins.

Not quite. The title says "Seeks OK" not "Gets OK". So they don't know for sure, they're just doing a recap of the Zoning Board Meeting.

The Village board meeting is set for Monday and is the final approval that Six Flags needs from the village.

http://www.gurnee.il.us/village_board/vb_agendas.html

2. Approval of Ord. 2010 - granting a certain variation from the zoning regulations pursuant to the Conditional Use Permit granted under Ordinance No. 80-25, adopted May 19, 1980, relating to Six Flags Great America.

Also, Fox News Chicago also mentioned it with a 1 minute spot (though I cannot find it on their site yet), where they said that the park is looking to build a 150 foot stand up coaster from a closed park in Kentucky. Only thing they did get wrong was that they said Six Flags last new ride was in 2003 (they meant to say last new coaster I guess).

Getting closer.

I just saw the thing in Fox this morning, I wish they would stop referring to it as Chang, it used to be Chang, when it comes to the park I bet all the money I have it won't be Chang.

david wrote:^ I get it. It's your home park, and you want good things for it. That's the same for all of us. But if you were getting a big addition, why have you guys yet to have a single notification of it? No track pieces, supports. Nothing.

It's because you don't really need supports and track till further in the process. It's take forever with electrical stuff, removing stuff, and just working on the ground and figure out where each support is going to go, not to mention putting in footers. Besides, what's the point of bringing in track and supports now when they probably aren't going to start doing groundwork till November anyway? I think the only reason why that one track came to the park is probably because they fit it with the roller coaster train cars. If you have room, why not bring it in.

About Vekoma restraints, I have no problems (of being "hard" restraints) with the Swamp thing ride they had at Cypress Gardens, no problems with Deja Vu's, no problems with the SLC's, no problems with Batwing / X-Flight, and the worst one really is Invertigo (because they are very close to your ears and head, but really it doesn't matter because I don't bang my head anyway on that ride. Our B&M restraints (for Iron Wolf and Batman) are hard as a rock, but it's usually not the restraints that's really the problems when it comes to bad rides. It's usually the transitions being so messed up that your head bangs into the harness. On Maverick, your neck will go all over the place if you don't follow with your head the course of the ride. I just don't see how Maverick is going to last a very long time. Maverick riding is 10 worse than Iron Wolf. It's the whole ride with poor transitions. Iron Wolf is a one time problem.

^I don't see Maverick's problem as transitions, more of awful restraints for short people (my bloody shoulders proved that theory well.)

All:

I got an e-mail this afternoon from the village of Gurnee. Subject line is "Village of Gurnee - June 21, 2010 Amended Village Board Regular Meeting Agenda"

Here is a quote from the message to show why the Agenda was amended

Attached please find an amended agenda. The item related to a variance for Six Flags Great America has been removed from the agenda.

So, if anyone was planning on going on Monday, don't bother. SFGAm is no longer on the agenda.

New plans? This late in the game chances are slim. Maybe just postponed for a little bit. Construction will not start earlier than September/October anyway.

Exactly. Maverick is not a hands up ride. If you put your hands near your neck and grab the harness from the inside, Mav becomes much more enjoyable. in my opinion, it's a coaster that's 10X better than Iron Wolf.

Isn't v2 like 185 feet? Didn't they need variance for that too? And that was in 2001. So Bull wasn't the last one.

Whizzer's execution was halted approximately 1.5 weeks before it was to be dismantled (thanks to Shockwave really stepping it up and volunteering to let Superman take its place :)), so it's never too late. Granted, that is dismantling instead of adding a new ride, but the same principle holds.

Personally speaking, I really don't thing Chang is a good fit w/ the park. It's not that great of a ride IMHO and can be kind of rough at times, much like most B&M stand-ups. So, if it is indeed canceled, I truly hope that space is used (at a later time) for something that would be IMHO a better fit for the park.

EDIT:
From http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=388872

Six Flags officials announced they will not appear at the Gurnee village board meeting Monday as originally scheduled. Initially, officials were on the agenda and expected to appear before the village board to request a variance for a roller coaster that would exceed the 125-foot height allowed under law. However, Jennifer Dugan-Savage, director of communication for the theme park, said Friday officials "were no longer on the agenda to appear" at the board meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. at Gurnee Village Hall, 325 N. O'Plaine Road. She said officials are "still considering expansion, but we are just not meeting with the board on Monday." She did not have a date for when the theme park may appear before the board in the future.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I'm thinking the coaster is off. If there was still a chance, you would think they would have gone ahead and get the variance anyway as they were already set to do so. Oh well..let the rumors for 2012 begin. :D

I doubt this has anything to do with new management. New management was April-ish. So wouldn't this have been called off earlier? This is really confusing.

I hope that the park just needs to get a few things in order. Although, wouldn't they just get approval, and then say they're not doing it. Hmmm... :|

Edit: I find it funny how Hank was going on about how happy they are, and how this really is the first major addition in years. And now, their's a chance Chang is no more. hah. -no.

Crazy? Meetings get postponed all the time. What suddenly they decided to ship it off to St. Louis and we get nothing for the space marked with a new ride 2011 sign? Don't be foolish. It is not going to be build next month anyway. Calm down.
