Best SFGAm Memory of 2008!

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

if they left SWF standing there, it would not have been operating. People are less likely to notice an empty spot than a ride standing there not operating. They made the right choice. SWF was in BAD shape.

Like stated earlier, SF was in terrible condition. THis may be a bad analogy but it's like a 15-year-old car. The engine goes and it's financially more efficient in the long run to just buy a new car than keep replacing old parts.

My worst Moment had to be on 4/19/08!

I seen the remnants of Vu and SWF, it was a horrible site, considering I've never been on Vu, I wanted to cry. J/k
I don't like seeing the coaster in pieces, I really wanted to go on it! I'm hoping Whizzer is removed and SWF gets replaced. I do agree that SWF was in bad condition. BUT so is Whizzer, I'd like to see Whizzer replaced with a coaster of a more modern version of it's type.

On this topic, wouldn't it make more sense to have buccaneer Battle in SWF's spot? I mean there is a lot more room around Vu's spot for something larger.

^I probably had the most terrifying PTR this year, with those pictures of VU's towers....

I look forward to my PTR this year, see your opinions on the BB construction.

^ First thing, Whizzer is in nowhere near as bad a condition as SWF was. Whizzer isn't in perfect condition, but most, if not all of Whizzer's issues right now are cosmetic stuff that can be addressed easily such as paint and minor repair work on the station. As for replacing Whizzer with a more modern coaster of its type, nothing available today really compares to Whizzer. I don't see Whizzer going anywhere anytime soon, and I hope it stays that way.

As far as Buccaneer Battle, I think you are underestimating the footprint of the ride. Based on my interpretation of the layout drawings, it seems like is going to fill in just about the entire Deja Vu area.

I believe Whizzer had a lot of station work done last year.

Everyone lets accept it because it will not change anytime soon: Whizzer was saved before and the people that be realized it holds special meaning to lots of fans. Plus it is the only coaster of its type left in the U.S. Six Flags might take it out eventually for something more updated but it won't be in the near future as they already have 2 areas to put something in and Hurricane Harbor turns 5 in 2010 it might get the privilege of getting something new. Parks don't take out rides very often. Especially these days when you don't really have money for replacing big rides like Whizzer with something even half decent. I believe Shapiro once said how he loved American Eagle as a kid and that pretty much guarantees it is safe so right next to it I would bank on Whizzer leaving at the very end of the possible amount of time it can still be working.

And figure in the cost of getting rid of the trees and making the land capable of being built on.

^^Just because American Eagle was a ride Shapiro liked as a kid doesn't mean they won't tear it down. If the ridership is poor, and they want to build a new ride, they would tear it down as fast as they could if they had the money. Businesses aren't going to keep things for nostaglia reasons. You can think that they will never tear down any old ride in the park, but they will tear it down when they see fit.

Anyone can say Demon and the Whizzer are family rides, (Six Flags needs rides for the families.), and Shapiro can't tear them down because they have been there what's seems forever, but they don't care. Six Flags doesn't care about nostaglia, or that Iron Wolf is the first B&M. Six Flags Great America can always get new family rides (roller coasters) to replace Demon, and Whizzer. It's all about how much attendance, and how many breakdowns these ride get.

If they were never going to tear down the carousel, American Eagle, Demon, or Whizzer, they wouldn't have a turnstyle, and have the employees count how many people come on the ride per hour.

"Newer" rides they could possibly remove like they did to Deja Vu.
They could remove older rides like they did to Splash Water Falls.
They could remove a classic old theatre like Theatre Royale.

Nothing is that safe as one would hope. So, if you really like a ride and just never have the time to get on it, make the time this year for it because it could disappear next year.

You may think I'm only talking about SFGAm, but look at Kiddieland. That Polyp ride was down most of the year last year as I've seen. Cypress Gardens has no rides anymore. I have never been to Hard Rock Park, but that amusement park is no more. Windy City Amusements got rid of the Super Sizzler. A lot of the rides that were at the Wisconsin State Fair are being sold.

The park cannot AFFORD to replace Eagle if it were to remove it soon. Not only that but it runs good for being built in 1981. If what you said was true Whizzer would have been out already. It is hard to finds parts for the last ride of it's kind here and Whizzer is even older than Eagle. In the future when they can afford big rides thy WILL take something major down but not unless they absolutely have to which doesn't appear to be the case with Whizzer or Eagle. Eagle gets a decent line typically though it is hard to see with such a enormous queue line. Demon on the other hand...

Demon's line increased last year compared to 07. Beginning in about June, its line was almost always to the rocks below the lift.

ohh, to the Irony!!

"Need to be more Family-oriented" Then why is it the "Family" Coasters that are getting crap for attendance?! Hmm?

I Find the whole "Family" thing BS. As long as the family rides(not coasters) attracts people, and the park makes another profit this year....I really don't care.

Opening weekend always rocks. Don't know about his year since it might be 35 degrees but nothing beats having the weather be pitch perfect every time you go. Unlike 2007, we didn't have to reschedule at the last minute just played it safe going the days when it was no more than 20% chance of rain. Never boiling hot. No sudden downpours. Simply good theme park weather.

Not too many stand-out moments for 2008, other than getting a girl kicked out of the park...

Random memory from opening day, I believe 04. There was this guy that would regularly visit the park who owned an old rusted out white car that was parked in front of the gates. He left his car there that morning and walked to Burger King to get breakfast. I was talking with a few other enthusiasts and in comes a tow truck (we knew the guy was there often, but he wasnt around and we had no idea where he was so we didnt say anything). He came walking back from BK as the tow truck was pulling out and went running after it . He ended up getting his car back after paying off the truck driver.

This was the same guy that into an ACE event without realizing it. Since the event didnt have tickets they just let everyone in that was in line for the event and he ended up with ERT. On a later date he told me "I wish theyd do a Fat Saturday again, that was great!" and still had no idea that he wasnt supposed to be at the event . Im sure a lot of us have seen him, older guy who smokes a lot with the Miller Lite hat? I swear we used to see him every other week.

Well back in 2007 Vu's opening day after it got its rehab i came off the ride. I saw a fight break out and a dude threw the garbage can at the other dude and they were complaining about each others girlfriend. It was a day to remember and for riding Vu for the past year
