Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

Being a first time visitor, how much can you realistically do on a Friday in early August. I'm not sure whether or not to see the water park, but I don't think I will have enough time. How long are lines for major attractions? 1 hour? Less?

You can't really predict crowds, but if I had to guess, I'd say an hour and a half at most for major attractions.
Next SFGAm trip: June 5th

If you truly think time is going to be a factor you could allot some extra $$ and get a Flash Pass or Gold Flash Pass and save some time that way.

Don't go towards the end of August.
That's my only advice.

^The worst time to go except FF (crowd speaking) FF is always worse than normal for crowds.

maybe you should check the trip reports from the time you want to go in previous years. It may help you get an idea of what the park will be like, since they don't really change much.

I went last year on a Wednesday in August and it was very busy with youth groups, etc during the day but by late afternoon we were walking right onto the rides or just waiting a few minutes.
Happy Riding!

Last year I went on the last operating weekday in August and it was dead.
-75 degress
-sunny, no rain
-open 10-5
-water park closed
And it was one of the best summer days I have had at that park.
My ride counts were:
Viper ( 8 ) (walk on)
Raging Bull (5) (5-20 mins)
Demon (2) (walk on)
Whizzer (2) (5 mins)
Iron Wolf (1) (10 mins)
V2 (3) (5-20 mins)
B:TR (3) (walk-on to 5 mins)
S:UF (2) (20 mins)
DeJa Vu (closed)
American Eagle red/blue (closed)
It was awsome and I plan on going that day again.
