What causes this?

Okay, I tried for three times to load this site to no avail, then tried back later a couple times, didn't work. Now I finally am able to go on the site and for some reason, all topics are considered read because there were supposedly "no new posts". There sure were new posts. I had to scroll over and look at dates of the most recent postings on every single forum to see which ones I haven't read. If anyone has any idea how this could happen, I'd like to know. I mean, it doesn't make sense.

Usually its the server is being slow, and by constantly refreshing the server thinks you visited enough times to mark all topics read, even though it hasn't sent you the data yet to show the forum itself.
