Extra Safety

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

After hearing the news about the woman flying out of her seat in the "Oh my- Woman killed" topic, I was wondering what type of extra safety stuff do each of the roller coasters have (also rides if you know)

I know Superman has a bar at the top of the trains so incase the armrests unlock, then your harnest wont open up during the ride. What do the others have?

Iron Wolf has extra seat belts on it's trains.

Whizzer's seatbelts were added as a precaution. The ride was originally designed to keep well behaived riders in their seats by centripicle (spelling?) force.

I know they have seatbelts but is there anything that will prevent the harnests from poping open like Superman has that bar at the top of the trains?

Centrifugal force :)

I know the other Whizzer at Santa Clara's Great America had a fatal accident, and that was back when there were no seatbelts, but I don't know if the accident was because of that.

A train overshot the brakes and crashed (at a slow speed) into the train loading and unloading the in the station. The boy was probably standing during the crash, lost balance, and fell under the train or something. Not sure how he died, though. Anyways, the original brakes were replaced with the now side-fin style. The seatbelts were added, basically, so that if someone stood up, they couldn't sue the park, because they would have had to take off their seatbelt first.

I had heard it was something like that.

I'm weird, I prefer to be stapled into rides (well, some of them.) On rides like the Eagle and Viper I like to be loose because I love the airtime. And some rides, I don't want a seatbelt at all (like Rue Le Dodge or Columbia Carousel.)

Besides having the main pins sticking into the armrests on both sides of the harness on S:UF (I'm sure one of them could hold you), They also have a little petruding pin that comes out near the end of your armrest as you are turning onto your stomach. If the harness comes undone, this pin will hit the harness and hold it there and prevent it from opening up all the way.

Raging bull has the red line which prevents the coaster from operating unless the line is showing.

I think all rides have pegs like on superman that will lock the restraint in place. The only difference is that you can't see them.

Not really.

Most harnesses just have the regular locking device. Arrow and B&M and a few others have 2 sets of ratchets, Intamin is just the hydraulic system(just one to the best of my knowledge, but it's fairly failsafe), only one off the top of my head that has more is Mondial Rides which have 2 sets of ratchets, a hydraulic(usually automatic that closes the Restraint for you) system, and one more huge ratchet(it's massive) with only one notch that must be closed for the ride to operate due to computer interlock, when you ride a mondial ride you can hear a huge clunk come from the back of the seat when it closes, especially if you are larger and they need to push the restraint down for it to lock, it's the clunk of approval :)

Also the B&M hypers also the the computer interlock, but it just says if the Lapbar is engauged into the 3'rd ratchet.

Oh and on the Maurer Soehne X-car there is hydraulic and 3 sets of ratchets each capable of telling the ride computer which notch the ratchet it's in, it's a very neat system.
