Restraint Changes - Do we need them?

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby Ilovthevu' on March 15th, 2005, 5:17 pm
SFOG has just opened and two of their rides have gotten new restraints. I bring this up because they have Batman the Ride, and so does SFGAm. So, do you guys think SFGAm needs new restraints on Batman?

They also put new restraints on another B&M called Georgia Scorcher which is similiar to Iron Wolf. Don't you guys think we need new restraints on Iron Wolf?

I would love for them to change the restraints on Iron Wolf like Georgia Scorcher's because they could be a lot better.

They're about the same. I think that SFGAM's will stay the same. Did they just put in new restraints for Georgia Scorcher, or did they get a new type or harness?

I think that they will stay the same, like Sixflagsguy said, they are pretty much the same. The only reason I can see SFGAm chaning them would be to get rid of the harnesses in bad condition, but i doubt it.

Maybe they were damaged because of the sun and heat.

Those are the same restraints as always. Looks like they just sent them back to Ralph Alberts to be refinished/recoated.

I'm thinking ours are just about due for a new finish as they were getting rather shabby last year (at least on Batman)

they aren't new (at least the Batman ones) they're just painted. see how the joint where the restraint pivots is still yellow? if the restraints were new, they wouldn't have two colors...unless they were going for that look.

I don't think new restraints would be needed now, maybe next year, but now they are fine.

They need to put a cushion on each end of the harness so you dont have a headache when getting off the Wolf :D

Wolf's restraints are fairly well padded, in my opinion. Batman's are hard, though

^I totally agree. However, I think BTR's restaints are less used (hitting heads into them). I really think there should be some way to change IW so people don't have there heads banging between the headrests.

With restraints on BTR, SFOG people have told me that BTR were most likely painted. However, they think that Georgia Scorcher has had it restraints changed (new restraints).

On most rides with corkscrews you usually hit your head on the sides of the headrest. Everybody needs to learn to hold their head to the side so it doesn't get hit.

Iron Wolf could just use new trains in general. The padding is fine and I love the ride, it could just use new trains.

^Yeah, definately. The current trains are too rough and tumble, bangy and clangy. Nice B&M trains like the ones on Georgia Scorcher would be awesome!

Aren't Iron Wolf's trains made by Intamin?

Yes, I believe the trains on there now are Intamin. On Demon or BTR, I don't have the banging problem like IW though. I think the harnesses on IW are too close to your head.

For the other two standups by B&M that I've been on (Georgia Scorcher, and Chang at SFKK), I havn't experienced head banging like IW. I think SFOG Scorcher's corkscrew goes the other way though (I'm not positive on that.).

I think that if they could change the train soon, it would definitely save the ride for much longer. The popularity for this ride has gone down since it was put in. Yes, it was built 15 years ago, but I'm still shocked how packed BTR (built in 1992) is especially during the day.

I truly believe that SFGAm did something to Shockwave's harnesses the last year couple years of operation. However, people probably had a headache after that ride when they went on it before those last years (like me), and decided that they weren't going to ride it again. It was too late though.

If the harnesses where to not be close to your head they would be pointless they have to cover your shoulders. Also Chang and Georgia Scorcher are not as intense as Iron Wolf is.

well IW's trains are Intamin made, but the restraints are newer B&M's right? they replaced only the restraints around the 2000 season, if I remember right.

yep, trains are Intamin/Giovanola, and the restraints were replaced around 2000 with regular B&M ones which are quite a bit narrower and closer to your head (which made the headbanging far worse than it was before)

Does anyone think that two new trains would be an investment that Six Flags would want to make with Iron Wolf?
After all, the ride is 15 years old now, I would just wonder if they plan on keeping it around long enough that new trains would be a worthwhile investment.

Yes, I do think that should make an investment even though its that old. Demon is 20 plus years, and its still there. SFGAm doesn't really want to get rid of any coaster. It's 10 million and above to replace one.

Does anyone have a picture of how the old trains used to look?

I think the problem (as someone said before) with the old trains was that they didn't have a harness or something to secure the person, so they went to this style. (I don't really know what they said completely, so you have to ask someone else about that).

rcdb got pics. I don't know what you mean by the trains didn't have a harness that secured people. it was an OTSR, just a different shape than the B&M ones.

The old ones are square shaped and the ones we have now are more of a "V" shape.

I think that DEMON could use just a lap bar because you do headbanging on the corkscrews. And if you stupid people are thinking that youll fall out with lapo bars................... THINK AGIAN! I rode Poltergeist in 1999 when it had over the shoulder restraints, it had terrible headbanging, but later they invested lapbars and boy did that improve the ride. And you wont fall out because Poltergeist has lapbars, and Poltergeist has a cobra roll, a side winder, and a corkscrew and i did not even get close to falling out.
