If history repeats itself, and it usually does with Six Flags and Great America. Expect to find that Hurricane Harbor will not be open on time in 2005. Looking at the webcam, it appears to me anyway, that the construction is moving slower then expected and worse yet, no sign of cement being laid down.
Why is this important? because for one cement cant be layed down with snow on the ground lol. Unless The compnay in charge of this project has a new way of laying cement down with snow on the ground, expect this project to not really get underway until the middle of March at least.
Also, remember Chitown's post a while back, where he mentioned that Six Flags was going to be selling not only a regular season pass, but a Hurricane Harbor pass as well? then suddenly that talk was gone? to me thats a clear indication that the progress of Hurricane Harbor is not going well.
History Does repeat itself:
2004- Ragin Cajun, King Chaos not open for opening day
2001- Deja Vu and Vertical Velocity had opening delays as well
All that being said, they have about an extra month to pull this project off. If they actually get off their butts and get workin after christmas I can easily see this to be ready by Memorial day next year. I think the hardest part will be laying the cement for the paths and building all the buildings (admissions, food stands, bathrooms, lockers). The slides and theming won't be nearly as difficult as one would think.

But one thing though Nick, and i agree with you is the Weather, if Gurnee say gets a really early Snow say 2 inches by the middle of December or a late snow by Mid March, thats really going to slow things down considerably.
April is going to be the month where i think everything gets finished or 90% completed but there still you have to factor in Weather again.
rain/snow really isnt a big deal when i comes to building buildings and stalls whatever.
I seriously doubt this project is going to be completed ontime.
I think that it's very possible for them to be open on time. Don't forget,
they really don't need the waterpark to be open until June. Would you
want to go to a waterpark in May? I wouldn't. To cold.
They would have from March to June to get things going very fast. That's
3 months. It's very possible, so I wouldn't start to doubt them yet. I
wouldn't start to doubt until April 30th.

Yeah, but like i said Northern Illinois is really at the mercy of Mother Nature. If we get a later blizzard say the End of Feb middle of March where we get dumped on with snow, Hurricane Harbor will be delayed.
But look at the camera, it looks like nothing has been done so far with the exception of moving the dirt and stuff.
I don't think it really matters when it will be open officially. I mean is it the end of the world if it doesn't open Memorial Day Weekend?
I'm sure they are doing what they can do as quickly as possible. I'm sure that SF has set approximate dates on where the construction crew should be by a certian time.
In the end, I don't think SF will loose money if the waterpark opened late and plus the signs said Spring 2005. Spring continues until June 21st or whatever, so let's not get worked up about it.
I do agree with all of you with the Weather Factor. I'm an "amature
meterologist" and I do expect a very active season, but I really think
we can have a very inactive Spring, little rain, then bam, they'll get
a lot done.
As far as the webcam goes. It is really hard to determine what is going
on, by the webcam. It only shows so much. I bet if you actually went
onto the construction site, it would look like a lot of work is being done.
In October, the webcam showed that not much was done, but, when I
would go to the park, it really looked like a lot of work was done.
So, it's all in perspective. I really don't care when it opens. I'm just
excited about it.
OH last thing. Galvan 316...You mentioned about the talk about the Combo
pass being gone. I just received an email from SFGAm yesterday,
announcing that they were extending the time that you can get the $84.99
Combo Season Pass. So, I think that the talk is sill there.

I might have been unclear, in that post, but what i ment to say is that Six Flags was selling just a HH season pass and just a Park season pass. and that together the passes would be 129.00.
I see where you are getting at Mike, but I still think it can be completed on time. They would have to train their gaurds either at the park or at indoor pool, so Time is crunched. I see they park opening in time but not all attracrtions open on time.

What is this being compaired to? We've never seen a waterpark being built so we don't know how far ahead/behind it really is.
And cement can be laid with snow on the ground. Wet cement has a freezing temperature of 25 degrees F. As long as the cement's surface is not allowed to freeze then we will be fine. The curing of cement acually generates heat (the reason why your not supposed to keep your hands in Plaster of Paris when it cures). Companies (many market themselves as being winter certified) can lay cement in cold weather if they keep the stuff warm by using a tarp (like a blanket that keeps the internal heat in) or by using heaters and tents.
I guess until we're all contractors we can't really make assumptions of how the park is coming along. The guys get paid the big dollars to build things in strict time limits.
And also, Has Six Flags even hinted as to the opening date to Hurricane Harbor? For all we know they might be ahead of schedule. I don't think it was even intended to open before May 31st (when about every outdoor public pool opens). Last year it was in the 40's on opening day.
So I vote yes to it opening on time because nobody really knows when it is intended to open.
Edit: Agree with GreatAmerica2003 but he got his post up about 1 min before me.
And JamesB. What kind of stuff do you do for meteorology? Feel free to PM me.
Yes, concrete can indeed be poured in sub-freezing temperatures. They do not pour the entire pool at once. When you pour a large expanse like that, its done one section at a time. Its easier to keep warm. Turbo-propane and kerosene heaters are brought in to keep the pour warm until the surface has cured and dried. The only thing that you should not do is pour in the rain. Other than that, you can set concrete virtually anytime.
And if you aren't planning on using the facilities, why are you concerned?
From the looks of things right now, it seems they are busy laying all the water pipes and sewer lines and other infrastructure. As it has been stated before Curing Cement is Exothermic and can be laid in sub freezing temperatures. Once they get done with all the electrictal, water, sewer, gas, etc, they will start pouring foundations for everything and once that happens, and they are cured, Water Slides take very little time to build, I'd fully expect for it to open on time around Memorial day. However if it's late April and they are just starting to erect the slides, then there may be problems

As already stated, they are not behind with the waterpark. As Fparker said, the nitty and gritty things are being done now and once that is done, the easier stuff will start.
Anyone notice that the main parking lot has been repaved already?
I know that there was a newspaper article recently where the PR Rep was quoted saying that the Water Park in on schedule and that they expect vertical Construction to Begin in February.
I"M SORRY To be off of topic, but Can you now apply for job at six flags for next season? And do you know how their system works- I mean: hours of work and so on? THANKS B/C I wanna work there thx again!
there was just a press release that stated DESPITE THE WEATHER. THEY ARE 100% ON SCHEDULE. ON NOV 25. THEY RELEASED A SEASON PASS UPDATE AND SAID THE FOLLOWING ABOUT THE WEATHER
"The highly anticipated Hurricane Harbor water park at Six Flags Great America is still very much a big mound of dirt at this point, but park officials assure the water slides are arriving and construction of the new attraction is on schedule. A lot of the progress (on the new attraction) is horizontal now, but the rides go up pretty fast," Hoffman said. "We'll be vertical by February or March."
SO YES THE WATER PARK WILL BE ON SCHEDULE.
They will they build rollercoaster in winter all the time. so im sure they know what they are doing
