All my parents ever talk about when they go to six flags is about how the edge crashed. But they are never sure how it crashed. I was just wondering if it crashed in the elevator, or the brakes failed. And if our version of the ride crashed, then why are similar models still operating at other parks?
I was also wondering why nobody on these forums ever talk about the ride.
Lastly, what type of ride do you prefer? Giant Drop, or Edge type ride.
The Edge fell in the elevator(lift) shaft. It didn't have anti-rollbacks. No one was killed though.
I have been on Demon Drop at Cedar Point(which is the same thing) and all I can say is that these things are one heck of a rush! But Giant Drop is also great, so it is too hard to decide.
BTW, 'The Edge' now operates(sometimes) at Geauga Lake. I think it is called Mr. Hyde's Nasty Fall.
Yeah i have been on the demon drop at cedar point also. I was scared that it would crash every time i went on it though. I like them equally, but giant drop you get off faster.
Did they make any changes to the design after the crash?
And did we give it to gaugau lake, because we couldnt afford the maintence for it or what?
Edge was uncerimoniously torn out of the ground and shipped to Rocky Point Park in Rhode Island(the entire electrictal system arrived in milk crates and some footers were still sttached to supports), once they finally got it running again, the park went bankrupt and closed where Premeir parks(not sure if at the time they called themselves Premeir Parks yet though) bought it at auction, though they left it (basically standing but in storage)at Rocky Point park for a few years before finally dismantling it and moving it to Geauga Lake, where it still stands under the name of Mr. Hydes Nasty Fall.
As for the accident, a few changes happened to it, and all others like it. For some reason the car was(intentionally I believe) stopped about 3/4 of the way up the tower, and in the process of restarting the ride the car somehow disengauged from the lifting mechanism and if fell down the lift shaft crashing(luckily) into an empty car, and that car provided enough give to save the 3 riders (all had ruptured kidneys, broken pelvis, along the the usual extreme G-Froce related stuff that you'd see in most car accidents). So the changes were, they added an anti rollback to the lift shaft, and they changed the programming so there is never more than one car in the lift shaft any time (as if that emtpy car had people in it, it would have been much worse).

Yes, as you said above. It still 'stands' at Geauga Lake. I say stand because it has only operated once this season. Premier and Six Flags let this maintenance nightmare get even worse and it's just so out of control Cedar Fair won't run it. It ran one day for a picnic and they had to have a walkdown to get people off the ride. You can have your POS ride back!
I rode one of these at SFMM, I think it gave more of a rush than Giant Drop, but the thing was really a piece. The seats were very uncomfortable and the brakes didn't sound to great.

I wanted to ride the one at SFOG, but the friend I was with(non-enthusiast) didn't like the noises it was making. (Loud banging; screeching, and other metal on metal type noises )
this happened on saturday may 28 1984. As the three teenagers car neared the top of the tower, the lift mechanism broke. The car plummeted back down the shaft, crashing at the bottom with such force that the seats curled up around the victims. all three teenagers were wearing "I went over the Edge. . . And Survived" T-Shirts at the time. Although seriously injured, all three young men survived.
The ride was dismantled by Great America and sold to the rocky Point Amusement Park in Warwick, Maine. When that park went out of business the ride moved to a park in oklahoma, then on to a park in ohio where it now operates, modified with a safety break, under the name, "Mr. Hyde's Nasty fall.
there used to be an article on it at rideaccidents.com, but i cant find it.

Yeah, the one at SFMM made the same noises...but I figured it was onlya few stories high...what possibily could go wrong?

On a serious note, "The Edge" did operate briefly after the accident when Six Flags bought Great America (The accident happened under Marriott ownership).
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
Whoa, this reminds me of this hilarious guy I met in line for Demon Drop, maybe an enthusiast, was talked about The Edge crash. I was like "Didn't this ride crash?" He was like "Yeah, one just like this crashed in Chicago". For some reason I didn't think it would be at SFGAm anyway...
Then I asked sarcasticly "Then why do you ride this". He replied "Cos it's awesome. I've ridden this thing a million times." When his car was going back to the lift he gave the rock hand thing. For some reason I'll never forget that.
Anyway sorry to get off topic, but these rides really scare me. I have rode DD twice and it is quite a rush. I personally like the 3 seconds before the drop.
I think when I looked this up a few years ago I found the report on rideaccidents.com I remember it saying that the jkids also broke their legs.
Ive been on Giant Drop and Demons Drop and I like them both equally. I was actually feeling a little bit scared on Demons Drop when I first went on it and I havent had that feeling since I first went on Raging Bull in 99. I also like the rides layout.
Yeah i was also scared my first time. The only reason i like demon drop of giant drop, is because demon drop you land on your back, which i think is cool. Giant Drop i know exactly how long utill each drop. I think its hilareos when the gp try to count it out from the ground. Because they cant see exactly when it stops at the top. Then they get on and they count it out at the top and they mess up and they get more scared.
