Does anyone know when the Power Dive was removed? I was so scared of that ride when it first opened. I didn't ride it until 1998. I was 18. Once I finally rode it, I fell in love with it. I haven't been to the park since 2000, so I really don't know what happened to the ride. Anyone with info on when and why it was removed, let me know!
It closed during the 2001 season and was taken down shortly after the 2002 season began Its removal was pointless and stupid, its queue was replacd by a bowling game called powr Alley. Some supports still lay in its former location, but the body is in storage along with Shock Wave and the Sky Whirl cages. I wish Great America could be like it was just a few years ago when Raging Bull was built, and get more creative so no more rides or Marriotts theming would have to be removed
Hey I have a REALLY good feeling thats where our next flat will go. I for some reason would really like to get somthing like Delrium. But what gets me mad I was watching some coaster show last night and they said that was the first of the kind of flat. When its wasnt! It came out in 2002 (thats what the show said) and I went to a carnival in barrington and they had the exact ride and it was called After Burner. Really fun ride!
It's not how high or how fast you build the roller coaster it's how smooth you build it!
Were you watching 'Ultimate Thrill'? I saw that too! After seeing the slingshot video on that, I REALLY want Great America to build one. There's always 2004
From What I Recall:Someone had told me that there was an Injury on PD as well as CC. That is why they ended up taking them down. I agree with you SFGAMNUT, we are staring to loose the Mariott theme to the park.

If I correctly recall there was one of those at CP and during the offseason the tower snapped... and they took it out. We could be talking about two different things though.
yea SFGAMKid, it seems like the feel of the Marriott days were starting to decrease after the 2000 season when Sky Whirl, haybaler, and the Yankee light house were removed and the Yankee Clipper was renamed to "Ice Mountain Splash" We got lucky that Whizzer stayed this year, but it probably won't last much longer. As for PD there was no accident on it, how ever there was an accdent on CC. I actually was on Power Dive the last day it ever ran. The employee even told me enjoy this ride, it's gonnabe your last I still don't get why that thing had to be taken down...
Coasterzak, didn't CP get a thing like thrill shot(sfmm)? I'm talking about the thing where there's 2 towers hold this dome like thing with 2 giant bands, and you get snapped up at 86 miles an hour.
Thanks for all of your replies. I am so pissed that the Power Dive is gone. That was just such a fun ride. It was so different from all the other rides because you actually could feel the blood rushing to your head. I know it wasn't the most enjoyable ride for some, but I loved it!!!!!I miss Tidal Wave, Shockwave, and Power Dive!!!!
I know what you mean, I miss Power Dive alot. My favorite 3 rides at the park are (were) Power Dive, Shock Wave and Iron Wolf (I know, I like em rough ) I know alot of people nagged about Shock Wave and Power Dive being rough, but in my opinion they were Great America classics and fun rides. It was sadto see them go.
Power Dive was not part of the Marriott era. When SF bought Marriott, The Edge was still there. However , that ride was torn down shortly after and PW was put in its place. The footprint of PW is very small. Besides a traditional Ferris Wheel, nothing else will fit in that footprint. They do need to put something in Cajun Cliffhanger's place. Just laying some sod where it stood is kind of a waste of valuable land that could easily house another flat ride.
I finally retired the Sarah Palin signature because she is now 100% irrelevant.
No, Chitown, one other more suitable ride can replace Power Dive on it's spot. They should get a rotoshake. They are like topspins, but instead of rotating forward, they do side to side like Power Dive. The Mall of America has one, I don't think there are any closer than that to Great America.
if they were going to put a ferris wheel in....i'd prefer them to put back the sky whirl....gives you time to rest your feet!!! and its the only thing my mom will go on too....
