Gurnee's Red light camera enforcement. (Watch out now)

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

I know we have had other discussions about this but I wanted to post this here.

The warning period is now over. They will now be sending out citations so make sure if you are visiting SFGAm, to stop completely before making right hand turns and to watch for the dreaded yellow light when approaching an intersection. All this is , is a revenue generating scam from the towns that have these installed.

You get the stupid 1 MPH tickets in work zones and now this. Looks like it might now be a bad idea to drive 30 MPH everywhere and stop at green lights

The 1mph over in work zones is just a false rumor. I have seen a few articles where the Illinois State Police deny that....they say they don't usually ticket until your at least 10 over on the speed cameras.

The Red light camera's I am kind of used to now, there are at least 10 major intersections near my house that use them. As long as your over the white line by the time the light turns red you are fine.

I also read recently Red Light cameras actually cause more accidents at intersections they were installed at. Since people are slamming on the brakes at these intersections it's causing more rear end collisions. While T-bone accidents from people blowing the lights have stayed the same. So it's strictly a money making scheme from the city and doesn't improve intersection safety at all.

I was at an intersection with my friend and they were like this is good, I havent seen a crash since these started and people are being better drivers. 10 seconds after he said that two cars in front got into a crash because the first one didn't want a ticket and the second car was in a hurry

If the yellow light isn't long enough, it's easy to get into a crash. Some lights, the yellow light is so darn fast.

Another scam they are doing at some of these lights is having the turning arrow shorter so bam get a ticket. One light had only let one car go by, and it turned red.

My opinion on lights in general is that they should be longer. They shouldn't have a 1.5 minute green light, and than it's already red. There is a light in Wheeling which is that way. It wastes time to keep on switching from green to red, and so on.

Again, my solution for less crashes if it's not a scam is for the lights to have a longer red. The light is on green, than it goes to yellow, and than red. Well, not many seconds later the other light goes to green. Increase that amount of seconds, and you will see less crashes. The yellow lights need to be longer too if you are going at 40 mph to stop at a light.
"I've been staring at the world, waiting. All the trouble and all the pain we're facing. Too much light to be livin' in the dark. Why waste time? We only got one life. Together we can be the CHANGE. So go and let your heart burn bright"

The time a light is yellow is intentionally reduced so that more citations are issued and more revenue is made for the city. Most of these lights are put up and serviced by private companies who give the city a percentage of the money from tickets issued and paid. This has nothing at all to do with safety and everything to do with money. And while i have never received a ticket from one of these Ive been told by other people that when a ticket arrives that you are basically told you are guilty and have to prove your innocence which runs contrary to what should be the case in this country.

I have to agree with you Bob. I'm a U-verse tech for AT&T and it's not like the managers don't treat us any respect, but now with the F150's we drive, it's like a moving target for people that are sue happy. So if we see the damn light getting ready to change we have to get the hell out of the way of the "less fortunate" that are poor trying to make a quick buck. Most of the time when I see those damn cameras, if I'm driving my other truck I just shoot for the pole that connects them to the ground and run over 'em reeeeeeeeal good.

You sir are a true humanitarian for trying to remove these cameras so the less fortunate won't have to pay the bs tickets that result :P

Well look what we have here. As Gurnee is now going to send out citations and rack in some cash, another town that put them in 8 months ago are now in the process of removing them.

2 BIG THUMBS UP TO Schaumburg Illinois for realizing they aren't that great at promoting safety and are just money makers.

I heard on Johnny B's show the other day that more and more towns are getting rid of them. I hope that the S.O.B.s ( I don't mean the coaster at KI either!) that invented the things lost their life savings on the P.O.S.
