While I do not agree with dropping pennies and such, whomever said it was essentially harmless is right. Terminal velocity of a penny is just about 45 miles an hour (22 m/s) and multiply that and the mass of the penny will get you the momentum. Very small momentum, nothing to really worry about. Now if somebody caught it in the eye if they were looking up it would cause damange, but not on the top of the head. As mentioned it would sting a little bit, but that is it.
( I really am glad SF ejected them, as that is stupid behaviour )
Again I agree totally with SF, just because its 'harmless' doesn't mean it should be done.
Are all of you people stupid too, I thought that the people here would know better that dropping anything off a tower is dangerous. Forget the stupid physics stuff, who really cares. What I am saying is that you are by the platform or something, and you get struck in the head by a penny or anything, I am confident that you will be very mad. There are accidents occasionally where stuff may fall out of pockets, but doing it on purpose is just stupid, it is NOT funny. Also sandals falling should never happen, they should make you take off your sandals before ascent for that reason, SO THEY DON'T FALL OFF.
Universal Orlando Mechanical Engineer Marathon down, Goofy to go.
Speaking of the "check hands" when I went on the Giant Drop, our ride operator didnt even check our hands. I forgot to get his name and report him, but still, if someone found that out, people will be doing it over and over again with the same operator there not checking hands.

Here you go with the harmless thing again saying it wouldn't hurt if it hit you in the head, Heres a questions for all you harmless thinking people : Have you ever had a penny thrown at your head? Did it hurt? Im sure it did, I have been hit by a penny that was thrown at my head and it did hurt and I no it wasn't going 40 somthing mph so that says a penny being droped from that height can and will hurt pending where you are hit.
The whole point is don't throw things from rides whether harmless or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I did get hit on the shoulder with dime from GD. All I got from it was a little headache, a bruse, and a ten cent peice. So don't say your as good as dead. Hey I'd love it if spare change would land on me. There lose my gain
Were getting a Water Park! WERE GETTING A WATER PARK!!!!!
You can't fly with egales if you hang around with Turkeys
I know that I am goign to get yelled at for this....The idiot's on the board are shown on topics like this, Throwing change off rides is not only dumb it is dangerous, and can and has been fatal. So if you think it is ok to throw change off the ride, do it, get banned from the park, possibly get a law suit, and I will laugh at you.
Okay, I have a number for you all. I'm not going to show my work because it took an entire sheet of paper and I'm on a laptop with no number pad.
A penny dropped from 227 feet taking average wind resistance of a tumbling penny would have the speed of 82.68 mph depending on humidity and air pressure. The force of that hitting an object would be 16.56 pounds. Now that is over the weight of a bowling ball. But, you have to think of the surface area of that. Think of balancing a blowling ball on the edge of a penny on your head. Now that is more than enough to leave a bruise or draw blood.
So, mythbusters probably failed to mention the force of a penny on a human body. Concrete can take a lot more than 16 lbs per square milimeter of force before chipping.
I totally agree with you. Someone should lock or delete this topic, so we don't give people any more ideas.

Try this (yes, I just did try it..it hurts) take a gallon of water and a penny or other coin. Hold the penny (edge side) on your head and try to place the gallon of water on top of it. A gallon of water is 3.7 liters (water is 1kg per liter) is about 3 kg. That is about 8.15 lbs. IT HURTS. It hurt to the point that I couldnt rest the full force on it. My statement is that a penny edge on at maximum velocity will damage the head. 1/2 to 1 cm depression to some estimates (well, that is off the sears tower so it would be a bit less). That is a LOT of damage.
By talking about this over and over again, someone is going to say to themselves, let me try it and see what happens to another person.
