CHANG WATCH: The Official Topic

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.

Deja Vu was my favorite coaster and Splash Water Falls favorite water ride. After years of clones (Dark Knight, Superman) I want something that does not seem stale after a season or two. To this day people say Superman is unoriginal and nothing special even though it is our first flying coaster. Yes, it is laziness and utter stupidity to leave SWF queue lines in place. Thanks to GAR, that area is not as bad as it could be all barren with nothing to cover it. But thos elines are clearly visible even when you have a game stand set up by the former entrance. Taking those down is not expensive. And would look 100 X better.

Deja Vu was awesome and the reason that it had so many problems was because they rushed Vecoma to make software for the ride, and they ended up with a faulty, non-reliable program. At Silverwood the new home of Deja Vu they have none of the problems that we had with it because they fixed the software and it works so much better and is not broken down nearly as much. Six flags has made some stupid decisions and I hope they don't make another one with our park.

Six Flags did not rush Vekoma, Vekoma could not get the ride to operate properly after they built it. I dont feel like writing a book in this forum trying to explain all that was wrong with that ride but Vekoma did not deliver a working ride to Six Flags, even after they had been working on it almost the entire season. That is what sparked the lawsuit and it was after Vekoma's failed attempts that SF went to outside companies. The thing just did not work properly the way Vekoma had designed it and changes had to be made. A similar situation hapenned with Test Track at Epcot which opened 2 full years after it was scheduled to. Unfortunately sometimes things just don't work the way they are designed on the computer and major modifications have to be made.

Several things hapenned in the years following that but you saying
the reason that it had so many problems was because they rushed Vecoma to make software for the ride, and they ended up with a faulty, non-reliable program.
is untrue. The way it operates at Silverwood now is completely different programming than what it was originally designed to have. I wish people would just let the DejaVu thing go, i've been on it well over 20x at SFMM and never seen it break down once and that is a Six Flags park.

No Chang? Hmm... that kinda sucks. I wasn't looking forward to it, but I wasn't dreading it either.

Why do I always spell Vekoma with a C, ohh my life is so difficult. Anyway, I live basically between Illinois and Montana, so I made sure to visit Silverwood when I went to Montana, it wasn't far away. Anywho, when I was there I asked the Ride op what the consistency of the ride was and she said it was running much more efficiently and without any mechanical problems. So something must have been done, because the problems were fixed. I thought it was a software problem thats why stunt fall didn't suffer the same problems because they fixed it, but I could be wrong, ohhh well. If anyone can find out why there is a difference in reliability please tell me, I knew about all additions they had to make with the bars and safety stuff, and the problems of the original GIB in Georgia (the replacement train).

Also, about the completely different programming you were talking about, that's what I was trying to get at. They modified it at the new home because of the experience six flags had to go through with it. But wasn't the magic mountain one the last one to be installed and it was reworked after what had happened with the original prototype. Plus, didn't Shapiro dream of getting MM to have the most coasters so he wouldn't have dreamed of taking it down. I know I should move on from Deja Vu, but it's like getting divorced, you always remember it. (It was my first looping roller coaster too).

I was wondering about the Chang pieces. What I keep hearing is that since we already have a stand up coaster, that they are sending all the Chang pieces to us for refurb, since we would know the most about stand ups and our proximity to Kentucky Kingdom. After refurb they are then going to send them to Great Adventure. That doesn't make sense to me, wouldn't they do refurb on-site.

Now that Chang is not coming, I wonder what will happen to IW now?? Will it get an extensive rehab or will it be removed in a few years? Hopefully, Six Flags will let us know something in the near future.

Wouldn't that be funny if we refurb it then we have to send it off to another park, lol.

It may be wishful thinking, but has it occurred to anyone that it could be possible that this is just a ploy by Six Flags to kill the whole "Chang is coming to Great America" rumor until they can officially announce it themselves, and try to surprise people? This has, after all, been one of the worst kept secrets of all time. After all, the trains are here, the land has already been cleared and marked, ready for construction. If it goes to NJ in the place of GASM, they still have to tear down a coaster first- right in the busiest time of the season, and in a high traffic area of the park, where they may have to close down a whole section of the park for safety during demolition and construction. It just doesn't seem to make sense to me. I could believe that it's going to Jersey more if they were planning on putting it at the "dead" end of the park- in the area where Freefall used to be. I guess we'll know July 1 if the GASM closes and the rumor is true...

I was thinking that too, about how they would have to close down that section of the park. It is definetly a funny time to tear down something during the busiest time of the year. Plus, with a name like Great American Scream Machine, why days before the 4th of July (not very patriotic to me)? But it is still so strange that they would rehab at a park then ship it to another park where along the way it could get damaged and whatnot.

No, I don't think it's a ploy. For the trains are here type of thing, look at what didn't happen with rides being at locations already. You have SFA probably still with Ultra Twister just sitting there, you had the stand up coaster at Darien Lake with nothing done to it, and you had the SLC being at Great Escape in New York with that ride eventually moving to Canada. So, who says that storing something automatically means it's going there? And for trains, I wouldn't store them at that Kentucky place. They might get damaged outside all the time. Remember, that Kentucky Kingdom is no more so you can't store them at Kentucky Kingdom anymore. Yes, Great America was probably the original idea, but for trains you have to store them somewhere at a park, or they are going to get bad.

The majority of the ride is not at Six Flags Great America. It is still in a crane yard in Kentucky.

After all of it i cannot decide if i personally would like chang here. There are plenty points of veiw as we all read and it is kind of funny looking at what members wrote in the very beginning then looking at their latest post.

I guess we will find out on July 1st (or 2nd) if the GASM is still operating or closed.

Not sure how much dead space they have, but the park does have a strange layout. It's kind of shaped like a "T," where you go to one end, and then have to turn back and go back again to the other end of the park. On one side, it's very "lively" with Kingda Ka, Toro, Superman, Bizarro, GASM, the log flume, etc., and then on the other far end, where the Chiller and Freefall used to be, it's dead. Other than Dark Knight, there's really nothing there. I could see them putting Chang over there, but to tear down GASM, during the busy summer season, closing off one the busiest areas of the park, just doesn't make sense to me.

I THINK that near the Dark Knight roller coaster, that's where they closed down an area of the park. That was were they had bumper cars, and Music Express, and remember they took down the Chiller, and didn't put nothing there. Didn't they have a Intamin Generation Drop 1 tower over in that area too? And they also have a stunt ampitheater like we have I think in that area. It's probably empty most of the year.

This picture tells me that the Dark Knight is near the Chiller because of that circular thing they had for the Chiller. http://www.gadvoutpost.com/gallery/albu ... lding4.jpg

I won't lie, this is pretty disappointing to me. It would be nice for this park to get awarded a thrill ride that isn't going in at four other parks at the same time.

The park will be fine, people will still go, but we all share the same feeling that GAm is treated as more of a second thought by the Six Flags brass. Stuff like this doesn't change our thinking any.

Six Flags Great America has yet to get a ride makeover. Six Flags Magic Mountain get a new ride every two years at least and Six Flags Great Adventure got the biggest ride in compay history in 2005. Our location makes them think we don't need much but sooner or later if you don't expand (grow) you die. No matter who or where you are.

True, but I don't think that we need to expand every year because we have no competition. Plus we don't have a lot of room to expand so we need to use what land we do have available wisely.
