What if Gurnee didn’t have Great America?
Theme park isn"t for sale, but village wants to be ready as Six Flags" business suffers
Daily Herald wrote:Great America in Gurnee isn’t on a list of Six Flags Inc. amusement parks that might be sold to reduce $2.2 billion in debt by year’s end, but village leaders aren’t taking anything for granted.
Gurnee Trustee Patrick Perry said the finance committee he heads will examine next month what the village should do in the event Six Flags Great America’s amusement tax revenue stops flowing one day. Great America was projected to generate $2.2 million for Gurnee this year.
Amusement parks don't last forever. Kennywood and Cedar Point are only a rare few that lasts to be 100 years old. Most parks fade off into the night only to be beloved memories of our past. Could Great America be one of those parks that hit the milestone of surviving for 100 years? Who knows, and who knows that 20 years down the road, we won't see bulldozers razing the park. Cranes dismantaling Raging Bull, and Batman is something that I don't think I could stomach watching.
In short, I think it would be a good idea for the Gurnee to have a back-up plan just incase anything happens to the park. Its sounds like to me, that Gurnee is starting to get nervous.
In the meantime, relax, enjoy your summers at the park, and relish in the fact that Great America is not going anywhere. Atleast not in the distant future.
If it walks like socialist, quacks like socialist, smells like a socialist, .... it's a socialist. Hope, and change we can believe in.
It would be really sad if GA would have to close down if the company goes bankcrupt. Its a good idea for Gurnee to have a backup plan maybe Gurnee should at least give tax breaks for Great America that way they could at least save money until they get out of debt. If Great America goes down u could at least blame the Gurnee Village board theyre the one who put all the taxes and the stupid ordinances that sometimes force GA to increase prices. Well at leasts they will still have Gurnee Mills to tax if GA ever goes down which will not happen I hope. Great America will not be closed or sold so dont worry about anything.
All that the daily herald article said is old news. Must have been a slow news day. But I agree, GA is going no where. CF would pick it up if they didn't have to accept all of SF debt. SF is not the reason the company is in trouble. Bad management and some bad choices are.
Yeah.
I really truely believe SFGAm will be one of the parks that will be around for a long time.
Perfect location+a very easy going villaige + a great selection of rides for all makes SFGAm a perfect park. And I believe that it will be around for many more generations of familes to and fans to enjoy.
I doubt SFGAm is going anywhere seeing the hugemarket being halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago...and if somehow sometime the park's revenue drops considerably I still think someone else would pick up the park.
1. Voyage
2. X
3. Millenium Force
4. Top Thrill Dragster
5. Raging Bull

CF would jump at it in a second. Kinzel already stated this.
As long as management gets replaced I'd be happy with whoever takes over.

I think if they did go under, it would be neat if a private owner would buy it. Maybe it will get back some of the character it used to have in the days of old.
