I want to agree, but I dont remember a whole lot from Amsterdam. I have vague recollections of "coffee" shops, brown bars, pizza places and pimps. Good enough for me I suppose

Actually i think it's a little worse than tobacco as it does alter your consciousness and thought processes. I think a better example would be comparing it to Alcohol, where I think Alcohol is far more dangerous than weed. When you're really drunk it's a lot easier to be up to no good. When you are really stoned, chances are you're just sitting back and relaxing for the afternoon, possibly forgetting about that pizza you put in the oven
Also no one has ever OD'd on Weed. Alcohol on the other hand...

I also agree that weed is a much safer alternative to lets say; Alcohol, Cocaine, Heroine, Meth ect. and since the way the government in the Netherlands qualifies the drugs into separate classes (hard and soft) and letting people use the soft drugs to a certain level, it keeps the soft drug users out of contact with the hard drugs. Interesting how their heroine problem hasn't gone up since the 70s (when they 'legalized' weed) but here in America hard drug use has only increased since the 70s...
