Favorite outside the park eats

Talk about anything that has to do with Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor here.
Postby Eagle04 on April 13th, 2016, 11:55 am
What are everyone's go to spots for outside of the park for eating? I normally end up at either Burger King or White Castle(don't have WC by us).

I would love some other ideas that I might not have done yet. Non chain restaurants can be really hit or miss but I wouldn't mind checking a few out.

I usually go to Burger King for the convenience of it, and the price.

Also, I've ridden Goliath 23 times in one day. HBU? :P

PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS PORTILLOS!

Other than the fabulous Portillos, I like eating at quite a few local places. Since I live near the park, I can enjoy a lot of these places. These are all non-fast food/major chains like McDonalds or BK.

Momcorn is a great local Latino place. Great authentic food. Right across the street

Bill's Pub is a great Pizza place a few minutes down Washington.

Sammie's is a great Hotdog stand in Grayslake.

Kaiser's is a nice pizza place near GAm.

Sarpino's is a great pizza place with free delivery.

Suzie's Swirl is a nice FroYo place down the street from GAm.

Chicago Red Hots is a great hotdog place across the street.

Rosati's is a nice pizza place across the street.

There's a ton more places I like to go to, but I don't have the time.

I usually end up at Olive Garden after a long day. For something quicker id try portillos. It's really good, but I havnt tried the gurnee location yet.

It's as good as the rest. The interior is pretty well themed, and is huge compared to other locations.

There is a new place "Craving" that opened a little bit down from Burger King last summer (It's by the Dunkin Donuts). Burgers, Beef, dogs and a huge order of fries.

A few other restaurant changes in Gurnee since the park closed (or a little before the end of the 2015 season)
1) In Laws restaurant (Sit down) that was by the employee entrance on Milwaukee Ave was gutted and is now Primo - an upscale Italian restaurant with a Chef from the Food Network competition (Chef Wanted) and Hell's Kitchen.
2) iHop closed down and is now vacant. Hooters will be opening in that spot in the July/August time frame.
3) Portillo's - already mentioned, but very good. Plan extra time as it is not as fast as McDonalds - but worth the wait
4) Pizza Hut now has moved from outside Gurnee Mill to the strip mall right next to Burger King (Quick personal pan pizza maybe). There is maybe six table as it is more for carry-out now.
5) The Chocolate Experience is new too, but it more upscale. The is at Washington and Milwaukee too.
6) Buffalo Wild Wings was built onto Gurnee Mills around the Macy's parking lot by Marshalls.
7) Jersey Mike's move to the strip mall in front of Gurnee Mill last spring, but most people do not know it is here.
8) Next to Jersey Mikes is Five Guys.

Also already mentioned - Sammy is a great place too and have a huge menu, but is a bit father (10 minute drive West).

Big fan of Steak 'n' Shake and Cracker Barrel... but end up going to Burger King more often probably just because of proximity...

It's Frightfest so time for a necrobump!

Any changes to the restaurant scene around Great America?

Portillo's is our current must eat when down in Gurnee. Any new favorites we should check out?

There is a new Chic-Fil-A that opened near the Sam's Club, but I don't find it to be that good(just me though). Other than that there really hasn't been anything that changed.

My favorite places to eat.
Breakfast: Chick-Fil-A (the one in Vernon Hills) or Denny's
Lunch: Pizza Hut or Cracker Barrel
Dinner: Red Robin or TGI Fridays

Avoiding the chains: Durango's near Washington and 41 is pretty good, that'd be my first and closest choice. Portillo's is OK. In-Laws is sorely missed, you can go up 21 to Fatman's and get the same vibe.

Average expensive burger joint, but they're OK. I'd recommend Sammies or Dog n Suds (closed for Fright Fest) out there.

In Laws closing (well..changing) is the main reason I started getting the dining pass. If I'm going to eat crappy inedible food, I might as well save time and money and just eat it inside the park, only part I miss is leaving the park for something less hectic and air conditioned/heated

Favorite Steel: Steel Vengeance, Expedition GeForce, Olympia Looping

I only went there for the all-you-can-eat Pizza and I didn't like having to wait 30-45 minutes for a pizza. Hence why I stopped going and went to Golden Corral.

Guy with a stick:
"Suzie's Swirl" has closed this location about 3 weeks ago, only Lake Bluff location now.

For eats: Jersey Mikes and 5 Guys are good and are in front of Gurnee Mills.

Oh, what? That's really sad! Suzy's Swirl was one of my favorite places to get ice cream/FroYo from. :(
